We were lucky to catch up with Anthony Marinello recently and have shared our conversation below.
Anthony, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
For more than 45 years, I have worked in aviation, law enforcement and emergency response, and throughout that time I saw the same problem over and over again: when people experience a medical emergency in remote locations, time is often the biggest obstacle to survival.
While operating Tropic Air Charters, I spent significant time throughout the Bahamas and surrounding waters. I saw firsthand how difficult it could be for residents, visitors, boaters and cruise passengers to access advanced medical care when emergencies occurred. Many islands are far from major hospitals, and in some situations, patients faced long delays before receiving the care they needed. I kept asking myself the same question: Why doesn’t a dedicated helicopter rescue service exist here?
The reality was that many people had talked about creating one, but no one had successfully done it. Rather than seeing that as a reason not to pursue it, I saw it as a challenge worth solving. Drawing on decades of experience as a rescue pilot, state trooper, EMT and aviation executive, I believed we had the expertise to build something that could truly make a difference.
What excited me most was the opportunity to create a service that would save lives. This wasn’t about starting another aviation company. It was about filling a critical gap in emergency response and bringing a capability to the Bahamas that had never existed before. In 2024, that vision became a reality when we launched the first dedicated rescue helicopter program in the Bahamas.
The moment I knew it was worthwhile came when we began responding to real emergencies. Every mission reinforced why we started. When someone is experiencing a life-threatening situation, minutes matter. Knowing that our team can help get patients to advanced medical care faster and potentially change the outcome for them and their families is what continues to drive me every day. Saving lives has always been my mission, and Tropic Air Rescue gave me an opportunity to expand that mission in a way I never thought possible.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My career has always centered on service, leadership and problem-solving. Over the years, I’ve worked in law enforcement, aviation, emergency management, pilot training and safety operations, experiences that taught me how to perform under pressure and make decisions when lives are on the line.
Today, I serve as president of Tropic Air Charters and founder of Tropic Air Rescue. Our company provides emergency medical transportation and rescue services throughout Florida, the Bahamas and surrounding waters. We operate advanced rescue helicopters staffed by highly trained aviation and medical professionals who are prepared to respond when people need help most.
What sets Tropic Air Rescue apart is that we established the first dedicated rescue helicopter program in the Bahamas, providing rapid-response capabilities to residents, visitors, boaters, cruise passengers and remote communities that historically had limited access to emergency transport options.
What I am most proud of is the team we have built. Every mission requires pilots, medical professionals and support personnel working together seamlessly in high-pressure situations. Watching that level of professionalism, commitment and teamwork every day is incredibly rewarding.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One of the most challenging moments of my career occurred in March 2024, just days after launching our rescue helicopter operation in the Bahamas. We received an urgent request involving 10 Americans trapped at an orphanage in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, during a period of extreme political unrest and violence.
The mission required careful planning, quick decision-making and a willingness to operate under extraordinary circumstances. Despite significant risks and limited support, our team remained focused on the objective: bringing everyone home safely. We successfully completed the extraction in under 70 seconds on the ground and safely evacuated all 10 individuals.
That mission reinforced an important lesson I have learned throughout my career: resilience is not about avoiding difficult situations. It is about remaining calm, adapting to changing conditions and staying committed to the mission despite uncertainty. Success often comes from preparation, teamwork and the willingness to keep moving forward when others might hesitate.

Have you ever had to pivot?
One of the biggest pivots in my career came when I shifted from public service into entrepreneurship. Throughout my career, I had always worked within established organizations and missions. Building a company required an entirely different skill set.
I had to learn how to develop strategy, grow an organization, manage risk, build partnerships and create opportunities where none previously existed. The transition challenged me to think beyond day-to-day operations and focus on long-term vision.
That experience taught me that leadership is transferable. Whether you’re leading a flight crew, managing a public safety operation or building a business, success comes down to surrounding yourself with great people, staying adaptable and remaining committed to your mission.
