We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Anthony Lewis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Anthony, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?

I was 14 years old when I start teaching in an after school program in Queen ny. I was assisting teaching the steel pan to kids in a middle school ,I knew nothing about teaching at the time . Over the course of weeks I watch the kids faces light up as they got the music and was able to play it by memory,the more they learned the more I enjoyed teaching . Fast forward 22 years later and I am still teaching music .

Anthony, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I am Anthony Lewis, born in Trinidad migrated to the United States when is was 12 years old and moved to New York, At age 14 I met Arddin Herbert , the music director of Casym steel orchestra ,where I became one of the after school instructors and my musical/teaching journey began.As time and years went on I have been able to work in different schools and different grades,I was able to restructure the music program syllabus in my band and change the way we thought kids .

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

For me my biggest reward is watching the kids on stage playing. To know that most of them never seen, heard or touch a steel pan before to actually perform for their friends and family is my greatest achievement.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

In 2019 I left the school system in NYC and moved to Orlando where i currently reside and I work as an electrician ,as I move out to Orlando Covid hit so the world was upside down but electrical work was still going on out here so I went full time into it. Five years later and I am still working as an electrician and wishing to get back into teaching music .
