We recently connected with Anthony Devon and have shared our conversation below.
Anthony , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
My very first dollar earned as a creative came from signing my first tv distribution deal at REVOLT TV.
VESSEL, my first tv pilot, was picked up by REVOLT TV and I signed a non-exclusive distribution deal for 3 years. That first check was reassurance that my stories are good enough to get paid and that I should keep going.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve loved movies and films since I was a kid. It started with watching Rush Hour with my mom, then transitioned to me submitting short films instead of essays in my English class.
I was the kid who carried a $20 camcorder, recording anything, from family home videos to friends starting a go-go band in school. Filmmaking has always been apart of me.
I’m most proud of the relationships built over the years as well as my ability to tell stories with incredible depth.
I want everyone to know that I create stories to contribute to both film and black culture. If my films are able to do that, then I’ve done my job.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Most rewarding is seeing your idea come to life. From idea to script to auditions to budgeting to location scouting to blocking to shooting to post-production to a solid piece (and everything in between) is one of the best feeling in the world.
The challenges I face throughout my creative journey are great too. I enjoy going through the process to the end goal; getting reps in every day and figuring out the most efficient way to the end of the tunnel.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Social media. I am not good at promoting my work/brand… at all. Marketing is just as important as your craft, if not more.
How can you share your work without a proper marketing plan?
It’s still a learning process for me – hopefully I get to the point in my career where I have a team for this shit cause I am lost 😭.
