We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Anthony Cortes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Anthony, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think confidence in yourself and your own brand is one of the most important requirements to be successful. Having that inner compass and gut feeling about the success of your company or product is so important when looking to be great at what you do. You must believe in yourself and what you have to offer before others will.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
At the age of 24, my two business partners and I launched my first business, Trend Studios in Downtown Orlando. It was the first salon of its kind to offer a high-end but welcoming atmosphere with some of the best hair stylists in town, Together we grew the business to 3 locations and finally closed at the onset of the pandemic. From that experience, I realized what I enjoyed most was bringing people together and throwing great events, During the pandemic, the absence of social interaction was very difficult for all of us especially when we needed eachother the most. I wanted to create an experience that was in the safety of the outdoors, with enough space for social distancing and ventilation.
Motion Flix, an outdoor entertainment company specializing in large screens, was launched in October of 2020. Motion Flix brings the theater to your outdoor (or indoor) space. We expanded to neighboring cities in Florida later that year and at the beginning of 2021, we launched in Southern California. Today we hold events in Orlando, Tampa, Miami, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Our goal for 2023 is to continue to expand into other areas and empower other up-and-coming entrepreneurs to launch their very own Motion Flix with our support.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
One thing we knew about starting an outdoor business in Florida is that there’s a lot of rain a few months out of the year and planning outdoor events during that time is almost impossible. We wanted to do events year-round and that’s when we had to pivot. We took a leap of faith and moved to Los Angeles and expanded our business so we could do events year-round (for the most part) while still operating and growing in Florida.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
There are many parts of my journey that have not been easy but I think the most difficult part was trying to find what my why is and what business I wanted to come up with next. We are always so conditioned from a young age to know exactly what we want to do and who we want to be when we grow up. Sometimes we forget that things can change, we can change and find passion in different things. During the time of my first business, I really felt like I found what I wanted to do, and suddenly things changed. I had to adapt to the situation and take time to really think about what I wanted to do next. After taking some time, I started to learn that bringing people together and throwing events is what I loved to do the most. Looking back, I’m grateful for that experience!
