We were lucky to catch up with Anthony Channel recently and have shared our conversation below.
Anthony, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
The mission driving Generational Curse Breaker is to authentically empower the youth and upcoming generations to break free from the negative cycles they’ve been exposed to or grown up around. Having faced my own share of challenges and hard lessons from a rough start in life, I spent nearly six years making poor choices and trying to fit in. It wasn’t until my time away that I deeply connected with my mother, fostering a stronger bond built on understanding and love.
In those conversations, I learned of my mother’s own struggles—how she defied the odds as the sole college graduate in her family, leaving her home state without familial support and never even meeting her own mother. That surprising fact fueled my determination to break the generational curse, refusing to let my upbringing dictate my identity. Though unsure of the path forward at the time, I made a promise to myself to inspire others to rise above their circumstances.
Upon returning home, I found my mother already immersed in the world of fashion with her boutique. She shared insights into drop shipping and even offered support if I pursued sewing. With a few trial-and-error attempts at branding, GENERATIONAL CURSE BREAKER emerged from a conversation about familial patterns and habits. It was a lightbulb moment—the perfect sum of our shared journey and the message we aimed to spread.
After failed attempts with fancier names and designs, the simplicity and meaning of GENERATIONAL CURSE BREAKER struck a chord. I texted my mother that night, declaring it as our identity and a beacon of hope for others like us. Together, we believed that by standing up and amplifying this message, we could create real change in our community.
Anthony, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Anthony Channel, co-owner of Generational Curse Breaker. Back in 2019, I discovered my mom was deep into fashion with her boutique. After spending time with her on some projects, we teamed up. It wasn’t smooth sailing at first—we had our fair share of setbacks. But after a deep family conversation, we landed on Generational Curse Breaker. It summed up our journey perfectly and the message we wanted to spread.
Then, COVID hit, and the fashion game went wild. We dove headfirst into learning new skills and techniques. We started off with selling tees and hoodies, pushing our brand’s message and logo. But as time went on, I got into sewing and upcycling—opened a whole new world. My wife and I hit up thrift stores, finding old blazers, jeans, anything that caught our eye. Each piece we create carries our message loud and proud. It’s amazing hearing from our supporters how wearing our gear makes them feel empowered and motivated.
Our color palette and why we use the colors we do come alot from our military background and wanting our message to really stand out. But it’s more than just selling clothing, you know? We’re all about building a community spreading awareness and good energy that makes us stand out. I take pride in where I’ve come from and the progress I see in myself every single day.
What I want you all to understand is that being a generational Curse Breaker is more than just a label. It’s about leaving a mark, breaking free from the struggles that have been passed down through your family from generation to generation. It’s about stepping up, making moves, and leaving behind a legacy.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A moment that really tested my resilience was back in 2021 when one of our collection drops just didn’t hit like we thought it would. I thought I had everything planned out, feeling like we were about to sell out, you know? But no, it didn’t go like that. It hit me hard, both mentally and financially. My wife, Raykel Channel and I kept posting and promoting, hitting up pop-up shops, spending money on fees, but barely making a dent in our losses.
What really got me through was when I went on Google and YouTube, and searched “why is my business wasn’t making money?”. I Found a ton of answers, pointing out how we were messing up. Although we haven’t ironed out all the wrinkles just yet, we’re deep in the hustle, rebuilding our Instagram and Facebook accounts from the ground up. But with faith, a dedicated team, and family backing me up, I’m still in the mix, pushing forward and making moves every single day.
Have you ever had to pivot?
One significant moment where I had to pivot in business was when our Instagram account hacked out of the blue. I was scrambling, trying everything to get it back. I had never saw that curveball coming. But thanks to some of our real supporters in our corner, we shot out emails, rallying them up to help rebuild our community, asking for any pictures they had. It’s been a serious pivot, starting fresh with a new page. But hey, we’re Generational Curse Breakers—we don’t fold, we don’t quit.
