We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Anthony Campbell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Anthony, appreciate you joining us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
The first dollar earned as a creative feels like your first piece of validation that you can make it in your field. I started out just filming music videos for me and my friends. I took a few classes in college on video editing but for the most part I was self taught. I did free videos for 5 years. I never earned one cent and honestly never looked to earn any money from it as I considered myself more into music than video. I moved to Atlanta in 2015 and randomly decided to offer music videos for $100.00 just to make some extra money. The first time somebody paid me for a video changed my life, because from that day on I took the craft more serious. I knew I was capable of making a living off this thing that started as a hobby.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hey, im Anthony, but most people know me as HiDeph and i’m a filmographer specializing in music videos and narrative works. I got into this industry by accident after learning to shoot and edit music videos for me and my friends. With a background in the music industry i’ve learned to help artists grow their platforms by providing targeted content. One of the things I’m most proud of, is between me and my business partners we can provide a one stop shop for music artists. From the studio, to writing, to producing, to mixing, to shooting and editing the video, to marketing and distribution i’ve been able to put together a team that can 100% service an artist. I’ve also co-created a platform called Reelworld that will highlight fellow creatives in the narrative film world. Every month we showcase actors, directors, stylist, writers, etc.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think the main thing that we can do to support artists is to use our influence to give REAL support. So many people with money and influence will claim to support a brand, and maybe buy one shirt, but then go to the Gucci store and spend 20k. I think if we were more intentional on making sure we spread our dollars to the upstarts as well, then so many more creatives could get their foot in the door. We should support up and coming brands, artists, creatives, etc, with the SAME type of money we support established brands.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
So far, for me the most rewarding part of what I do is being able to connect with people I was already a fan of. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with multiple artist that I listened to for years. I remember listening to “food” by graph way back in 2004….and in 2022 I was able to shoot a music video for him. Same can be said for Skyzoo, Benny the Butcher, Blac Youngsta, Boosie, and so many other people who I really respected. To be able to have a stamp in their careers is the biggest thing for me.
