We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Anthony “Brew” Brewster a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Anthony “Brew”, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Some of the most meaningful projects for me have to do with my kids . 2 boys , 4 girls . To watch them grow through the years and be introduced to the creative world means a lot to me . That is my legacy to and for them . The journey through music that I have taken has put a footprint in music so why not hand that to my kids if they choose it . I don’t force music on my kids . They need to want that themselves . In business , I would say that my band, the musicians , rappers, singers , even the homies that don’t play music but live and love it … that’s what I live for also . The community that is created with our live shows go beyond the 12 notes . People have met their spouses around us . That’s everything . That’s a good Vibe .
There are a few projects that are coming into flowering such as ”The 44 Obama Musical” created by Eli. Bauman . He came to me with this crazy political / comedy idea about the Obama presidency with Barrack and Michelle but through Joe Biden’s “hazey” recollection . Oh I’m down for that !
We did all the music from scratch and eventually built a full running musical . It’s a great show and funny AF .
We also have the ESPYS coming up which I and the music director for and we are the band . I love that time . Lastly the studio work is always full filling because we only work with the people that we want to work with , so it doesn’t make the Stu a stressful situation . Some of the best days in the world are my production partner Travis Margis and myself sitting in the Stu , not even talking , but creating on the same track at the same time . Magical .No words
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
What’s funny is …… I grew up in Venice .
My mom made me go to school in Santa. Monica and take music . Long story short ….I wanted wood shop! To make it worse , my grandfather was my counselor . I’ll never forget that day …. Artis Brewster ….He said “you can take band or chorus “ what ????? I want wood shop . So I chose band. Lol . I was already singing in the church choir because that’s what grandma’s make you do . So I said “I’ll play drums “
They put me on tuba . Bruh
The problem is … no one knew that I lived in another district and had to catch the bus with a tuba now .
So the 2nd day I called a “meeting with my music teacher Lida Beasley, mother of famous jazz piano player Jon Beasley , my mother , and my grandfather . I told them I would run away if I had to keep playing music . The next day my grandfather went and bought me a trumpet . He was also a trumpet player and flugal horn player . He took me to his concert the next night with his big band and I sat 2nd chair . Was only 12 and couldn’t even play the thing yet .
What happened next was great . All of the old guys in the bandstand were telling me how cool it was to be a trumpet player because we sit in the back and can fool around . Not like the flutes and saxes In front . … and the trumpet is little so I can carry it easier … I was sold …. They set me up . Thank you .lol
Honesty , transparency ,and great work is simply what I think people feel when they work with me . At least that’s would I would hope and give . Everyone gets treated the same when it comes to the House of Vibe work ethic . I always say that I want to be to music what Q-Tip is to cotton swab . You don’t ask for the cotton swab … you ask for the Q-Tip… that’s how strong the branding is ……. But the product has to stand up to the rest . House of Vibe
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal and driving journey is to give this to my kids . To finally have kids old enough to perform with me on stage and kill it is unexplainable … that’s the drive , that’s the mission . That’s my love
Have you ever had to pivot?
Listen being a creative is being creative period . ..but let me be clear .This is a hard job . Not all people are as lucky as others . I’ve always been a musician in heart ….. but also at some point in life that came with things like coaching , roofing , doing Escrow , roadie , security , driver , tour manager .and whatever other work you can do to survive while things aren’t flowing economically in the creative world . By the way , I’ve done all those jobs
