We recently connected with Anthony Bergamesca and have shared our conversation below.
Anthony , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I first knew I wanted to pursue a creative path early in my life, though I didn’t fully understand what I was going to do with the skills until the end of high school. In 5th grade, my grandmother gifted me an acoustic guitar for Christmas. My family could never get it out of my hands after that moment. Whether I was in school, or playing sports, my mind was always on when the next time I would get to play would be.
I realized early on that I was most interested in writing my own material. Starting out, I would learn the chords of my favorite songs, but never the guitar solos. I would always improvise my own ideas for those sections. I was probably around 8 or 9 years old, and those are my first memories of trying to craft something ‘original’ in the form of a song.
In my teenage years I began recording my own material, as well as other bands in town. As my knowledge grew here, I realized that the music industry is the place I wanted to spend the rest of my life. Whether it was writing, recording, or producing, I wanted to learn as much as possible to prepare myself for a professional setting when the time came.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Anthony Bergamesca, I’m a progressive house music producer from Columbus, Ohio who goes by Entel. Over the last 10 years, I’ve signed music to labels such as Anjunabeats, as well as an artist album with Deep State Recordings. In addition, I run and manage my own imprint ‘Entelect.’ with a focus on expanding my audio-visual story. While I love working with other labels, releasing on my own is my favorite. It gives me full control over the experience, as well as the ability to release songs more consistently. I look at each song like a chapter in a book, and each new song is a chapter accompanied by a visual graphic to represent it.
In the last few years, I’ve had the chance to play around the United States, as well as internationally in London, UK, and Toronto, Canada. Performing is one of my favorite parts of the job, but also not my only income stream. On top of my own project, I also do a great deal of sound engineering work for other companies and artists. This can be anything from mixing and mastering music to writing songs for a commercial or video game. I’ve also had the chance to do the post-audio for a few movies, and I absolutely love getting the chance to use my skills in that setting!
The thing that I am most proud of is my debut album ‘Melodies In Harmony.’ It’s a 10 track progressive house and melodic techno album that was released by Deep State Recordings in August of last year. The phrase ‘Melodies In Harmony’ is something that I’ve always used to represent the core values of Entel. It is a simple phrase that represents why I fell in love with music. It’s a reminder that music can bring a source of balance and peace to life when things get a bit chaotic. Being able to represent that story finally in the form of an album was a dream come true. After it came out I went on tour for the last few months of 2022, and it was a surreal experience that I can’t wait to do again.
I got into this business out of a pure passion for music. Early in my life, I realized nothing brought me more joy than being a part of the creative process, and I spent a lot of my early years reading and researching as much as I could about the music industry. I used to get in trouble in school for reading the Wikipedia pages of bands and record labels I was a fan of. This gave me a great foundation to navigate my profession as I started out in my career as an Audio Engineer.
I think the main thing I want people to know is the music industry is full of regular people making a modest income, not everyone is a rich superstar. While I love what I do as Entel and it’s my main focus right now, it’s not the only part of my job that pays the bills. That sentiment is true not only for me but for a lot of my friends as well. At the end of the day what moves me is being part of the creative machine that helps the music world move, and I’m proud to be a part of that.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Over the last 10 years, I’ve been fortunate enough to call a few different music studios home. In 2019, I took the experience I gained from others and founded my own. About 6 months later, the Covid 19 pandemic hit and my entire business model was thrown for a loop. Before I even opened the doors my main source of income, having artists come in for studio sessions, was no longer plausible.
By leveraging the internet age, and connecting with other artists and clients online, I was able to successfully weather the storm of lockdown while keeping the lights on. For my personal project, I hosted online streams and production sessions to provide a bit of entertainment while everyone was stuck inside. This was great for connecting with a new audience while staying in contact with those who already were supporting me.
I also began offering my services for mixing, mastering, and songwriting online to clients and did a lot of outreach over social channels and emails. While it was a lot of balancing at times since I was a one-man team, the satisfaction in knowing I was able to continue my creative pursuit without skipping a beat kept me going. I’m truly grateful for the experience as I will take the lessons learned with me on to the next stages of my career.
While I no longer operate the studio as I begin to move out of state, I am grateful for the business experience and am excited to carry it with me to my next venture.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The ability to be authentic, and craft stories from life experiences in the form of a song. While the music I write is electronic-based, and sometimes without lyrics, it still is inspired by real-life events.
Whether that be a night out with friends or my recent engagement, it’s these types of moments that inspire me. I love picturing a memory in my head and then interpreting it with music to encompass the emotions it brings me. This really shines on my personal imprint, ‘Entelect’ as the motion graphics that are used are directly inspired by the song. it’s these types of thought-out layers, and the ability to tell a story through music that make me absolutely obsessed with the creative process.
In addition, music has always been an outlet for me during some of my toughest moments in life. I will always remember the way my favorite songs got me through some of my toughest moments in life.’ in the last line of the final question to ‘In addition, music has always been an outlet for me during some of my toughest moments in life. I will always remember the way my favorite songs got me through some of my lowest points.
