We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Anthonie Culley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Anthonie below.
Hi Anthonie, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned what I have done at Hudson Bay High School where my teacher Mr Howard taught me how to work on filmmaking, camera movement and multiple other parts of the trade throughout my years in high school. I ended up being a pretty fast learner when it came to the editing program Premiere Pro that we were using at the time. At that point mostly I was making films for fun and screwing around with ideas along with one idea that I’ve still have not completed yet. I’m currently dealing with an obstacle in my way which is mostly writer’s block and trying to plan stuff out way too far ahead but I’m working on a road map to get some more films done heck maybe get to that secret project I’ve been working on.
For prop making I learned how to do it by myself with parts online to make cosplays and stuff I thought hey let’s grab a roll of foam cut it up and see what I can make out of it. I was able to make a full armor set along with props when doing that along with making a mask and a prop for a horror film( Masked Killer Evil In The Darkness). Mostly what helped me learn a bit more about prop making was also just taking random scraps and pieces and just slapping them together onto other parts to make something new. But nowadays I’m mostly working with a 3D printer and still cutting up foam to make stuff for a big project.
Anthonie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My Name is Anthonie Scott Culley I am an indie Filmmaker based in Washington. I have been working on films since 2014. Most of the films that I made were in high school with a mentor who helped me with a hands-on approach to learning with cameras, acting, green screen, news broadcasting, and editing. after high school, I took a five-year hiatus from filmmaking due to lake of gear I needed for the trade. halfway through the hiatus, I saved up enough cash to get some of the gear I needed for filmmaking and started planning out some films to work on. It took me till the end of my hiatus that is when I met my friend Dennis Edwards he helped me out of the filmmaking rut I was in by making me one of his actors/cameramen for his films. now I’m working on something big with help from Dennis and are friend Icarus in our film group Shattered Mask Productions.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
making something that you can be proud of even if it takes a lot of trial and error to make it work and making sure to take criticism with an open mind to help move forward.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
my goal is hard to explain maybe it’s to get a show I made off the ground or make as many moves as I can in life. I mostly going to see what happens and keep working hard on my projects. Doing what I can with the time I got.
