Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Annsh Maithani. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Annsh, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I recently directed a web series pilot which was based on how people are often judged solely on first impressions. We’ve all experienced situations where our first impressions can sometimes unfairly stick, or occasionally surprise us, so I wanted to show an exaggerated version of this reality and how it affects people knowingly as well as unknowingly. I didn’t want it to be a drama piece, because where’s the fun in that? It’s a satire, which spares no one, for the most part. The project was challenging for a variety of reasons, but ultimately, I had a great crew and cast who worked incredibly hard to make this happen. We are currently in the middle of post-production, and it will soon be ready to share with everyone.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Yeah, okay, so hi. I’m Annsh Maithani. I’m a Writer, Director, and Script Supervisor. I basically arrange words in a way that makes them all funky when spoken out loud, all in the hopes that they make perfect sense (or not) and are enjoyable for whoever reads or watches them. We all tell stories in some shape or form, I just try to tell mine where there’s a marriage of reality and absurdity, a marriage in which absurdity wears the pants and they happen to be extra large. Currently, I’m busy writing a feature script, a very dark satire, which I’m very excited about, and, as I mentioned before, working on the post-production of a web series pilot that I wrote and directed.
But when I’m not writing or directing, I’m on other sets, helping as the Script Supervisor or as an AD. Like, recently I got the opportunity to work on my first feature film as a Script Supervisor, which was a great experience. So, it’s always refreshing to work on something more grounded or to simply help someone fulfill their creative vision to the best of my abilities.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Very tempted to say money. But to give the answer you’re probably expecting, it would be the opportunity to create something new from scratch. Being on sets and collaborating with other passionate people to make films is just so much fun. If the 10-year-old me had been told I would get to do this, I would have laughed it off, thinking it was a fever dream. So, yeah, just getting to work on different projects, writing stuff, is in itself so rewarding.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
That whatever you make has to be appealing and entertaining to everyone. But, you can’t impress everyone, you can try your best, but there will still be someone out there who thinks that whatever you have done is just not good. If you think something is fun and you want to do it, just do it. If they have a problem with that, well, I guess they have a problem.
