We were lucky to catch up with Annique Monet recently and have shared our conversation below.
Annique, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I have just released a new song, “In My Dreams, and it’s unlike anything I’ve ever done before. For the past decade, I’ve been deeply immersed in the indie rock and psychedelic music scene, which holds a special place in my heart. However, in 2021, a unique opportunity came my way to explore my voice in a completely new light: as crystal-clear candy-yummy pop. I had been doing voice-over and jingle work for various brands that required a mainstream sound, and as I delivered, I fell head over heels for this fun, new sonic territory. It was like a breath of fresh air, and it ignited a need within me to create my own pop song and venture into that vibrant world.
I consider myself an experienced writer and singer, but mainstream pop presented a challenge. It took two years of hard work to mold this song into something that met, and in my opinion, completely exceeded my expectations. With the invaluable collaboration of co-writer and producer Crystal Rose and producer Ashwin Prasanna, we transformed the song into what I consider an absolute disco-pop hit.
“In My Dreams” encapsulates the rollercoaster of having romantic feelings for someone. It portrays the journey from initial flirtation and attraction to moments of withdrawal and mystery. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the tantalizing dance of desire that often leaves you yearning and dreaming about someone who seems to have pulled away. Despite the setbacks and the push-pull of emotions, the song’s underlying message emphasizes that there was a reason for the attraction and connection in the first place.
This track is not just a creative endeavor; it’s a reflection of my personal experiences and a universal theme of desire that many people can relate to. It invites its listeners on a seductive and sometimes maddening journey through the nuances of attraction and connection, all set against a catchy disco-pop backdrop with that earworm effect that keeps you coming back for more.
Annique, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Annique Monet, a South Florida native who embarked on a creative journey that led me to New York City, where I’ve spent the past decade. I’ve always felt the most alive when I’m singing and performing, and this passion has been the driving force behind my musical career. Though I take joy in creativity through visual arts as well, music is really where I feel my soul truly expressing itself. I feel my voice is as unique as my name, as I utilize different tones and personalities within a wide range. The “out there” has always inspired me, and often I try to provide a place to escape through my work.
My journey in music began in the vibrant NYC indie psychedelia scene, captivating those who sought a musical experience beyond the ordinary. In 2015, I made a notable entry with my solo album, ‘Phantom Letters,’ released via Beyond Beyond is Beyond Records. During this time, I reconnected with a childhood friend and fellow musician, Andrew Forman, which led me to explore the electrifying energy of performing as a lead singer in Goodfight, an indie rock band that embodies the essence of a good time.
However, the turning point came in 2021 when I stumbled into voiceover work and jingles. This serendipitous venture ignited a spark within me, prompting me to create my upcoming disco-pop single. Exploring this new sonic channel, I drew inspiration from artists spanning different eras, from early idols like Britney Spears and Paula Abdul to more recent icons like Doja Cat and Lucky Daye. It was a passionate journey driven by the desire to create something uniquely my own.
Collaborating with the talented Crystal Rose as co-writer and producer, and Ashwin Prasanna (The Angles) as a producer, I pushed my creative boundaries and stepped into a new, shimmering musical light. Now, as Annique Monet, I embark on an ever-evolving journey of self-discovery and unapologetic artistic expression.
My voice is the key to unlocking the aphrodisiac allure of my sound, inviting you to dance on the edge of the unknown, with every note whispering secrets of my extraordinary journey.
As an artist, I offer a unique blend of styles and a commitment to growth and experimentation. I’m proud of my ability to adapt and evolve within an ever-changing industry while staying true to my distinctive voice and vision. I’m excited to share my latest creation, ‘In My Dreams,’ and to connect with new listeners who appreciate the energy and authenticity I bring to my craft.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I got into EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) a few years ago and I will tell you it changed my life. This is the cross-fit of therapy. It is h.a.r.d. In short, you are reprogramming your limiting self-beliefs/self-worth that have stemmed from traumatic experiences throughout your life that shape who you are. I’m not a doctor, so please look into it on your own. But this is some serious stuff. It’s so important to face your demons and stand up for your younger self, and your present self, AND your future self! And truly know your worth. It’s an ongoing journey and commitment to being your own advocate. You’d be surprised what your beliefs can lock and unlock. And everything is so connected. The human body is real-life pyhsical proof of magic.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think a lot of people may think, “Well, you’re not making money on this, so what is the point?”, or something to that effect. But connection is the point, community is the point, expression and FREEDOM is the point! If you have something burning within you that someone else might relate to, you could change lives! Or at the very least make someone’s day a little better or add something thought-provoking. Tell me you never looked to music to soothe you through a tough time. Tell me you never looked to music to “set the mood”. We are all CONSTANT consumers of art. I beg us to change our mindset on worthiness=money.
