We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Annie Tevelin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Annie , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear from you about what you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry and why it matters.
That men and women don’t want anything less than the truth when it comes to the beauty industry. With so many years of embellished claims, over the top airbrushing and unreachable expectations in terms of what it is that makes someone ‘beautiful,’ I think companies would have such better success if they built their brand on community, genuine connection and lifting people up. It only makes me want to be a good influence on people as a result even more.

Annie , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As the owner of SkinOwl and on behalf of our entire team, I would like to say thank you for allowing our skincare to be a part of your life. SkinOwl is committed to simple, effective skincare that serves as your personal selfcare check-in. Without question, I love the smell of our Lavender Drops and the feel of our Maqui Berry Whip. But when it comes right down to it, SkinOwl gifts you a true token of ‘you-time’ alongside a commitment to caring for your body and mind when you need it most. Our collection is vegan, cruelty-free, conscious, plant-based and was created as a result of my own journey with cystic acne. Instead of going on Accutane, I went back to school to study Cosmetic Chemistry in my early 30’s and began formulating products that eventually healed my skin. What was originally a journey to help my skin eventually became the catalyst to helping hundreds of others with their most stubborn skin issues. Looking back, if I had never had acne, I never would have created SkinOwl. Alas, the silver lining! If you have any feedback, questions, or suggestions for us, please let us know! We’re always happy to chat, troubleshoot, and help in any way we can. Email [email protected] or chat with us here on the site. Thank you for being YOU and for letting us be a part of your ‘you-time.’ You deserve it all.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Since SkinOwl started ten years ago, I’ve always made myself visible when it came to what I felt was important. Skin advice, a lifting of one’s spirit, eventing, sharing our guiding principles. As a result, people know the brand is backed by someone who cares about the people. Community care is at the foundation of SkinOwl and I’ve shown that to people as it’s grown. It’s been humble and I think people want to support humble.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was that I’m not worthy of success. Success in my eyes took a long time to deduce. I was so busy growing a brand that I never thought to EXPAND upon what already was working. Once I deepened the layers of what I loved, success came. And it felt good. Not too fast or too much. It stayed right in the pocket which fed my confidence to keep going.
