We were lucky to catch up with Annie Green recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Annie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I am one of those people who has always gotten completely annoyed by the ridiculous amount of plastics and toxins that exist in our environment. I have always wondered why we as a species would pollute our own environment the way we do? My son was born with allergies to nearly “everything”, which pushed me to be hyper aware of the ingredients in everything. Once my children were grown and I had the energy to take on a new endeavor, I created /liv/ Nature, a company that sells solid shampoo bars and solid conditioner bars. My feeling was everyone needs to wash their hair, might as well do it in a way that is as natural as possible and zero waste…. No more plastic bottles! I am very sensitive to strong synthetic perfumes, so I made sure our shampoo and conditioner bars were delicately scented with only pure plant oils and botanicals that are pleasing without being overpowering. The scents are not only chosen for the aesthetic purpose but also for the benefits of promoting healthy hair growth. I am super excited about making a product that contributes to the health and wellbeing of the planet and the people on it. We can all have amazing, healthy hair and not pollute the earth. Win, Win!!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Since I can remember I had a very pragmatic attitude about keeping our environment clean and respecting nature. I was heavily influenced by my back-to-the-earth Mother and my No-Nonsense Grandmother who always taught me to look to nature first and grow your own food and use plants as medicine. I passed this deep love and respect for nature down to my own children. And these are the values at the heart of /liv/ Nature as well. I worked to perfect the formulas to be sure that all ingredients came from the earth and are 100% plant-based and contained no dyes or synthetic perfumes and made the hair look and feel amazing. I am proud to have created a product that our customers love and trust and feel good about using.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I have had to unlearn in the journey of starting /liv/ Nature is the old phrase “if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself”… NOT TRUE. I found for me it has been best to stay in my lane, work where I excel, my husband works on production and we hire a team of experts to fill the gaps. Bootstrapping can only take you so far and teamwork is far more FUN!
