We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Annie Foxx a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Annie, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of my favorite parts about writing and collaborating with other songwriters is the chance to be vulnerable to friends and sometimes complete strangers. There are days where I came into sessions in a great mood but also other days, where I was not. During the session of my newest single Be Bold, I was going through some hard friendship breakups and felt pretty low about myself. What’s great about sessions is that they sometimes act like therapy and I was able to talk it out with my collaborators and as a result Be Bold was born. Be Bold is a anthemic song about self-empowerment and not needing permission from anyone to being their best self. I hope it helps others whether they need new music to scream to in their car or new music to get them through a workout.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an independent alternative pop artist and songwriter based in Nashville originally from New York City. My career in music started on stage performing with different bands as a back-up singer and after a few years of touring, I started to write, perform, and release my own music. I love exploring the broad genre of pop music and really lean into the darker, edgier side of it through the production, melodies, and lyrics. I get to work with incredible producers and songwriters that are based around the world all and write together through out computer screens. I am super proud of the music I have released especially my newest song, Be Bold that comes out on June 23.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is hearing how your music helped another person even in the smallest way. Music was always my therapy growing up, and I am so honored that my music can help someone else and be apart of their healing journey also. I also write music for tv/film and it’s so rewarding to see my music elevate and complement a scene and characters on a TV show.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
One of the biggest lessons that I wish I knew earlier in my creative journey is staying true to your sound and voice. Trends always come and go and what is big now will always change so being true to who you are as a songwriter, singer, producer is the only thing you can truly do and control. You should never change yourself or decide to become a “sound-a-like” artist just to get more views or likes from others. True fans will come when you least except it and when you are your most honest self.
