We were lucky to catch up with Annick Gerard And Mallory Brodeur recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Annick Gerard and Mallory Brodeur thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Our first production, A Common Room, will always hold a meaningful spot in our hearts. The project stemmed from our personal goals of challenging ourselves as creatives and wanting to platform women and queer artists. Through this process, we were able to foster a sense of community amongst the audience and artists as well as learn what it takes to produce and start a company from the ground up.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We often get asked: What is a fishwife? A fishwife is defined as “a coarse-mannered woman who is prone to shouting,” which, regardless of gender, we felt exemplified who we are. Fishwife Productions was born from a vision to create a platform dedicated to amplifying the voices of women and queer playwrights by offering them a space to share their truths, struggles, joys, and triumphs. In a world where women and queer perspectives have often been marginalized, it is our mission to provide an empowering platform for these groups to express themselves, be heard, and be understood.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Non-creatives may struggle to understand that sometimes, creativity doesn’t come naturally to an artist, and you have to push yourself to find inspiration. It can feel like you’re hitting a wall, but often, it’s in those moments of forcing yourself to sit down and work through the block that the best ideas emerge. Whether it’s through a change of environment, or simply persevering despite feeling uninspired, creativity often requires effort.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
We don’t understand them.
