We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Annette Murray a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Annette, thanks for joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
I have always had a fascination for success, education, lifestyle and winning. Growing up in the inner city of Washington, D.C. in the 70’s was a good foundation. I was the second child of two teenage parents. Being the daughter of 16 year olds proved to be challenging; However, I always felt like Guardian Angels watched over me. Fast Forward through different trials and tribulations, I finally was enlightened through reading books.
Reading books allows your imagination to expand outside of your neighborhood, environment and circumstances. During my lust for life and reading, I discovered a statement written by J Edgar Hoover. Hoover issued a directive: “Prevent the rise of a ‘messiah’ who could unify and electrify the militant black nationalist movement.
This very statement helped me understand the Power of community. So, Electrify Atlanta is empowering my community to be like GODS. Walk with Integrity, Honesty, Compassion, Love, Understanding, Solidarity , Group Thinking and Good Vibrations.
Annette, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was born in Washington, D.C. and moved to Atlanta, Ga in 2001. I decided to become an electrician after nearly burning my house down, because I connected a GFCI wrong.
I have always been self-taught. Self- motivated and self- reliant. I simply have a genuine willingness to help others and learn anything one is willing to teach or share. My Brand is Me. Honest, Reliable, Enthusiastic and Colorful. This is what sets me apart from others. The willingness to DO THE WORK and be polite and informative to my clients.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The most significant thing that has impacted my management, thinking and philosophy is PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT. I study the following and watch and listen to motivational videos every morning and often while I’m driving. Jim Rohn, Les Brown, Brian Tracy, Eric Thomas, Earl Nightingale, Rev. Ike and Bob Proctor. “Things will get better, when YOU get better
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The one lesson I had to unlearn is that you need a lump some of money to start a business. I found this to be untrue and that there is always an alternative to accomplishing anything you put your mind to and have a genuine desire to achieve.
Persistence proved to be the best way of getting attention and opportunity. My strategy was to become an Apprentice at anything I wanted to learn. Whether through volunteer work or working for a low wage, you will eventually network with the right people. Integrity is the best word to describe it. People will gift you with information, money and opportunity if you deserve it.
