Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Annette BoVee-Akyurek. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Annette thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the best advice you ever gave to a client? How did they benefit / what was the result? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
As a psychotherapist and physical therapist my intention is to empower others and assist with skills that can be utilized independently. A few of the words I often share: *We’re all on our own journey. It’s not your place to “fix it” for others.
*You have everything you need. Trust your innate resources.
*Breathe through difficult times; breathe in healthy air, healthy energy, breathe out what ever you don’t need.
*Flow with the ups and downs of life. Trust all is ok.
*There’s no “rights, wrongs, good, bads, or shoulds.”
*Expect to be treated well.
*We all see things from our own “colored glasses.”
*There’s no such thing as perfection. Have you ever seen the end of the sky?
*Nature, animals, the arts, music, dance…an avenue to inner connection.
*Attend to your needs. What do you want? Tap into your center with breath to connect to your needs.
*Move yourself away from worry and into the present moment. In times of worry or “what ifs,” say “not now” and return to present moment.
These are just a few statements I share, I dont think of it as advice, but words to assist in daily life. Client often begin to apply these concepts, leading to more joy in the present moment.
Annette, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I began as a physical therapist, initially specializing in neurological care(head injury and stroke), then studying and working intensely with the practice of craniosacral therapy/somatoemotional release. This led me to working with complex and chronic physical conditions such as chronic pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, headaches, neck and back pain, TMJ and tinnitus, and GI issues. I believe that the mind and body have a deep interconnection, and addressing both aspects in healing is significant. This is why I then moved towards my PhD in psychotherapy (PHD MFT), and now combining both professions working with the whole system. In addition to physical issues, I also work largely with individual’s with anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, complex trauma, relationship issues, self awareness and self growth, aspects of addiction, stress related disorders, and overall wellness.
I am a psychotherapist and physical therapist working with issues of both the mind and body. I utilize a relational and integrative perspective with individuals with psychosocial-emotional or physical challenges, and work collaboratively with the client towards wellness. I am a Florida licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), mental health counselor (LMHC), national certified counselor (NCC), and physical therapist (PT). I am a certified hypnotherapist, craniosacral therapist, and an EMDR clinician. I utilize a variety of therapy approaches that best fit individuals in their healing process (s), and attend to the client’s unique needs. I have provided services as an adjunct professor, clinical supervisor, writer, and conference presenter.
A mind and body integrative approach is utilized to enhance overall wellness in assisting individuals. I see the mind and body as a whole embracing a variety of factors that contribute to the client’s present state, with less attention to diagnostic labels, with a framework that the mind and body is an interrelated system within itself and its ecosystem. I include several adjunct therapies as appropriate according to individual’s needs and desires, and brings forth my intuitive ability in my work. I function as a facilitator to the client in their process (s) and to assist individuals in their own natural self-corrective process through a cooperative relationship of honor and respect between the therapist and client. I believe individuals have their own innate ability to assist themselves in growth, change, and expansion, but at times may need assistance in some level of movement or understanding.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I have leaved in 2 others countries, a short time in Germany and 14 years in Turkey, Living in other cultures greatly expands the mindset. In each country I have worked, adjusting myself to the culture of the profession in that region. Interesting, my return to the USA was most challenging, trying to “fit into” the culture once again. I have moved my practice 3 times in a 12 year span due to exploration in the best place for me to live in Florida. Each time, through contacts and networking, I have managed to build my practice and be connected somewhat in the community. I say somewhat, because it is still not up to my liking, trying to expand my community interaction in Miami in my field; this I have found a bit challenging in this city. I believe the variety of work I offer and my integrative prospective in healing and wellness, This, along with my endless persistance, assists the growth in my work. I’ve been in my field for a very long time, and never loose my enthusiasm along my way.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Interesting question. I dont believe there are really “mistakes?” I had wished in the past I had gone to medical school after physical therapy school; it was my dream for sometime in my 40’s. But age deterred me, and perhaps for the better, allowing me to combine my 2 professions in a way to allow for really deep healing in my practice. I am passionate, I still enjoy a good client session, and therefore maybe I am right where I need to be.
