We recently connected with Anne Bedrick and have shared our conversation below.
Anne, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
I taught children for 30 years. Teaching them is like studying with a great artist. They are masters at living in the moment and watching what paint or any other art medium is doing. They work with their whole beings. The important lesson I learned? To watch what is happening in front of me and how it can transform, marveling at the paint as it moves, and ready to stop when something beautiful emerges. When I begin a piece, I use unusual tools such as squeegees and brushes mounted on long dowels to help distance me from what I know how to do. This allows the paint to surprise me and to be my partner, rather than my subordinate. The early, raw marks are so genuine and are at the core of what the painting becomes.

Anne, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For folks who may not have read about you before, can you please tell our readers about yourself, how you got into your industry? In college I studied sculpture but began to be drawn to painting in 2015. And, once I started, I fell in love with color. Each set of colors has a different emotional impact on the viewer. And, exploring color combinations is much of what draws me to my studio each day. Sometimes I will see a color when I am out and about and can’t wait to get to my paints to mix it!
What are you most proud of and what are the main things you want potential clients/followers/fans to know about you/your brand/your work/ etc.
My work is exciting! The complex layers allow you to see something different each time you look at them. And yet, the paintings are not overly busy, I work hard to make sure that each piece has areas to rest your eyes. In fact, in my most recent series, Ordering Chaos, crisp, clean edged shapes are contrasted by the loose lines and mists of color that I am known for. Each holds space for the other to exist and allows us to fully enjoy the other one. The regularity of one small square gives us permission to wander freely in the loose and unstructured portion of the work; it serves as a placeholder as our eyes meander, letting us know we can always return to the predictable. The world is chaotic and messy, and we create order for ourselves in the small things we do, like making the bed, in doing so we create this tiny sliver of calm that’s a small, deep breath of knowing.
what type of products/services/creative works do you provide?
I paint in all different sizes, but my favorite is working large scale. There is something about the whole-body movement that translates life experience to the canvas in a way that doesn’t happen as much when I just use my hands. And in a large canvas there is more space for subtle shifts in transparency or texture or color. These add so much flavor to the experience of looking at a painting.
If you want to see how my work would look in your home, I can virtually hang work to help you decide on the piece that is just right for you. And, if we can’t find the one that is just right, I am happy to make a custom work of art that reflects you and your home. Simply tell me the size and colors and leave the rest to me!
What do you think sets you apart from others?
I am very community minded. I am always looking for opportunities to help others and to grow the art community, not just myself. This might stem from all those years of teaching, but I strongly believe that helping others will also help me. To that end, I have recruited artists to open studios near my studio, and we are becoming one of the most vibrant art communities in the Coachella Valley. The art walk that I began for my immediate community of artists is now a highly anticipated monthly event and beginning next season, is expanding to include two other buildings of artists and gallerists. Additionally, I am one of the founders and organizers of Desert Open Studios, a free annual event that allows the public to peek into the studios of artists across the whole Coachella Valley. Last year we had 150 artists on the tour! This event has served to raise awareness of the amazing quality of art in the area, and I am hopeful that people will start to see the greater Palm Springs area as a place to go to see great art.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to help you celebrate your next chapter, to make you look forward to being in your space, and to make you proud to invite others in.
My complex abstract paintings help you make your home a celebration of who you are and who you are becoming.
The layers in my compositions reference the histories that inform our current selves, those that have shaped us, and that are sometimes only barely visible and other times show clearly through.
I want to empower you to make your space reflect who you are, with artwork that is as interesting as you are.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is creating artwork that speaks to people. When someone is so moved that they have to sit down, or get teary eyed at the story behind a piece, that makes me know that I am on the right track.
