We recently connected with Anna Valdivia and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Anna, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
“Success” is hard to define because it means something different to everyone, but for us at Profile KC we measure our success by the satisfaction of our clients. When we get to witness their skin improve, their confidence grow, and their mind ease after coming in for a service, we know we’re doing a good job. What it’s taken to get to this point, and starting a company, is a lot of hard work, research, training, drive, and faith.

Anna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Profile KC is a skincare spa in Brookside, and a dream come true for myself and my business partner, Trisha. We’re both licensed estheticians who met working at another local spa, where we became great friends, and mastered our crafts. We pretty immediately knew that we would start something of our own someday because of our similar work ethic and passion for skincare. At Profile KC we offer facials. waxing services, lash and brow services, spray tanning, and cosmetic injections. We sell the professional skincare product lines: Skinmedica and Bioline, as well as other local products like candles, jewelry, and accessories. Our goal when a client comes to us is to educate them on their specific skin type and empower them to love themselves from the inside out. We help them achieve that by listening to their appearance concerns and providing professional services. Often clients come in feeling stressed about their skin, appearance, or just life in general, and they leave feeling relaxed, reassured, and confident. It’s really inspiring to get to do this work.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The process of opening the spa was perhaps the biggest lesson of resilience for us. Anyone who has started a business from the ground up knows there are many challenges and pivots along the way, and to make it through you just have to keep going. We found a commercial building we liked the location of, but it wasn’t fully developed. That was both exciting and challenging because we got to design and customize the layout of our space, and decide how it would best flow for functionality. As the work on the building was getting done, we got into website building, logo designing, and marketing. All of which were things that, as skincare professionals, were not our expertise. We spent a lot of time researching which product lines we wanted to carry, and then worked through the process of actually obtaining them. Our Bioline products are an Italian brand so we had to work through language barriers and time zone differences to manage getting them. Then the tables we use for clients in our rooms were delivered and upon arrival we realized they were nearly 500 pounds, so we had to figure out how to get them to the fourth floor of the building (and they didn’t fit in the elevators). Like I said, anyone who’s started a business knows at the beginning it feels like one thing after another, but thankfully we pushed through and it’s been more than worth it.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
When it comes to esthetics, or any serviced based business but especially skincare, people are trusting you with their face. It’s a big deal. We all go about our life wanting to put “our best face forward,” so choosing an esthetician or medspa is something that should be given serious consideration. Because of that, we so appreciate our clients choosing us, and we treat them like family. It’s the personal connection we make, in addition to the great quality of service, that keeps the clients coming back. We know and remember what works well and what doesn’t on their skin, we ask about their families, and their careers. We remind them of their uniqueness and beauty when they share their personal insecurities with us. It’s really an honor to keep in touch with them.
