We recently connected with Anna Simpson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Anna, thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
At 54, after spending 20 years as a massage therapist, I took what felt like the biggest risk of my career: starting a new business from scratch in a field no one in my area had heard of—sound baths. Typically, at that stage in life, you think about winding down your work, not launching something brand new. But I felt called to this work so strongly. I loved attending sound baths myself, and I knew deep down that I had to bring this experience to others.
In some ways, it felt like a natural extension of my career in massage therapy. I had built a life helping people feel their best, and sound baths aligned with that. But the truth was, sound baths were almost completely unknown where I lived. I would be introducing a brand-new modality to people, and that was terrifying. Adding to that fear was the fact that I didn’t know how to facilitate a sound bath or how to get anyone to come to one!
Still, I dove in headfirst. I started small. I researched different instruments and watched videos of others playing them. I bought my first crystal singing bowls and practiced, learning as I went. Once I felt comfortable with the bowls, I began collecting other instruments that complemented the sound, gradually building my toolkit. Then I reached out to my community—family, friends, clients—and invited them to experience a sound bath at my home.
These initial sessions were a learning process. I asked for feedback, even handed out questionnaires, because I wanted to know what worked and what didn’t. Slowly but surely, I gained confidence. My playing improved, and I felt a stronger connection to the practice.
With this newfound confidence, I took the next leap. I found a studio to host larger groups, and through word of mouth and social media, my small following began to grow. Each month, more people were discovering the benefits of sound baths.
Now, I host multiple events every month, am featured in high-end spas in nearby cities, and work with a diverse range of clients, including recovery groups and corporate wellness programs. This journey, though daunting at first, has become one of the most fulfilling chapters of my life. Taking that risk has opened doors I never imagined, and it all started with a deep, unshakable pull to bring the healing power of sound to others.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Anna Simpson, a sound bath practitioner in the Sacramento area, and I’ve dedicated my work to creating spaces where people can experience deep relaxation, healing, and renewal. My journey into sound baths started after a long, rewarding career as a massage therapist. I’ve always been passionate about helping people feel their best, so when I discovered the profound effects of sound on both the body and mind, I felt a deep calling to explore this practice more fully.
I offer a variety of services, including group sound baths, private events, and corporate wellness sessions. My sound baths incorporate crystal singing bowls, chimes, gongs, and other ancient instruments, which naturally induce a calming effect. What’s beautiful about sound baths is that they make it easy for almost anyone to enter a deep meditative state. The body relaxes, the mind slows down, and in that space, people can rest, reset, and let go of the stress they carry.
I feel incredibly honored to be a part of people’s healing journeys. Whether it’s someone seeking relief from the fast pace of life, a company wanting to support the well-being of their employees, or a recovery group looking for holistic tools, I’m there to create that space for them.
What sets my work apart is the combination of modern research and ancient wisdom that I bring to each session. With 25 years of experience in therapeutic bodywork and sound healing training, I take a personalized approach to every sound bath. I’m always thinking about how to create the best possible experience for each client or group, whether they’re new to sound healing or longtime attendees.
I’m most proud of the diverse range of people who have been impacted by my sound baths, from spa-goers to corporate employees, to those in recovery. It’s humbling to know that this practice can reach so many different walks of life and that I get to be a part of that. What I want potential clients or followers to know is that my work is about creating a safe, inviting space for anyone to explore the healing effects of sound. Whether you’re looking for relaxation, stress relief, or a deeper connection to yourself, I’m here to guide you through that journey.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I built my reputation as a leading sound bath practitioner by being deeply engaged and genuinely invested in each participant’s experience. I always ask questions, listen closely, and remember the details from our previous sessions. My sound baths stand out because I offer a wide variety of instruments, which I regularly expand, and I take pride in playing them skillfully. After every sound bath, I make a point to check in with participants, ensuring they feel supported and know they can always reach out for questions or assistance. I’ve also built trust through consistency—I’ve never canceled an event, and my clients know they can rely on me to show up and deliver the calming, nurturing experience they expect.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Social media has definitely been my best source of new clients, particularly through running targeted ads on Facebook and Instagram. I work with a small budget, but it’s been effective in reaching the right audience. In addition, word of mouth has been invaluable—people who attend my sound baths often bring friends or partners with them, which naturally helps grow my community.
