We were lucky to catch up with Anna Sabatini recently and have shared our conversation below.
Anna, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
As you may know, the ongoing situation in Ukraine has caused many families to flee the country, leaving them as refugees. But here in North Carolina, we have a growing Ukrainian community that has been working hard to support them. I am part of this group and we’re trying to raise funds to help our fellow Ukrainians and those fighting for the freedom of our motherland.
I’ve found that holding painting workshops is a great way to raise money. In these workshops, I teach people about traditional Ukrainian art and how to create their own masterpiece. All the money we collect from these workshops helps the people in Ukraine who are dealing with this tough situation.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born and raised in Ukraine (which was then a part of the Soviet Union), and grew up in a family that had an amazing blend of different cultures. As a kid, I had a big imagination, and I loved to think about all the beautiful things in the world.
In 2014, I made the life-changing decision to leave my home country and relocate to the United States to join my husband, where I began a thrilling new chapter of my life. That’s where things got really exciting!!
Since I was interested in technology, I learned web design and started a freelancing career when I moved to the US. These experiences have contributed immensely to my network of amazing people and close friendships. But, at some point, I realized that I needed to find a balance between my digital world and my creative side in real life.
At some point, I wanted to try something new and unwind from technology, so I took painting classes and discovered a pretty type of Ukrainian painting called Petrykivka. It’s been around for hundreds of years and uses beautiful floral patterns and a unique brush technique to create stunning works of art. Learning about this art form helped me appreciate my cultural roots and find a fun way to relax after a hard day at work.
After some time my hobby became my small business. I’ve got a chance to share my creations with friends and family, and eventually with the whole world. I started selling them on Etsy and now I sell all sorts of art, like greeting cards, hand-painted hats, glass decor and Christmas ornaments.
My art is always happy and positive, it based on the beautiful floral patterns in the Petrykivka style, but with a modern twist. I love bringing color and joy into people’s lives with my art. Also, each painting is unique because it’s painted by hand.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Currently, my mission is to share the beauty of my rich cultural heritage with the world.
Ukrainian culture is ancient and has a significant historical background. The art style that I use, known as Petrykivka painting, has its roots in the land where brave Cossacks once lived.
These skilled warriors and farmers lived in close harmony with nature, and their love of freedom shines through in the elegant and artistic expression of this cherished art form.
For over two centuries, Ukrainians have treasured the beauty of Petrykivka painting. Today, this art form is listed on the prestigious UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Personally, I believe this art is a true gem that deserves even wider recognition and appreciation across the world.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As an artist, the most rewarding aspect for me is the ability to spread happiness and positivity through my work. Our everyday lives can be chaotically negative, but observing and learning from nature can change that. Even looking at a seemingly simple flower can reveal amazing complexity that nature has perfected, which opens your mind to see the world in brighter colors.
I want others to see this beauty as well. When my art makes people smile and feel uplifted, it is the most rewarding experience. Whether it’s a portrait of a beloved pet, a bouquet of favorite flowers, or the art style itself that reminds someone of their heritage, making someone’s heart happy is a magical superpower that creative people possess.
