We recently connected with Anna Rencz and have shared our conversation below.
Anna, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Our mission is to be the last dog trainer our clients ever need. In an industry that’s inundated with options and opinions – not to mention tons of misinformation and potentially dangerous methodology – it’s always been at the forefront for us to provide clear, accessible, and results-oriented training. This mission comes from personal history for me – before I started Boss K9, I had a dog named Bubbles who struggled with a multitude of challenging behavioral issues, including dog aggression, human aggression, and severe separation anxiety. As I learned more about training, I discovered that most of my own preconceived ideas about dog training were incorrect. My journey with Bubbles led my desire to share with others what I’d learned, and ultimately Boss K9 was born.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Anna Louise Rencz, and I have owned Boss K9 for over four and a half years. We started out in the Slavic Village neighborhood in Cleveland and recently relocated to the St Clair-Superior neighborhood. We are behavioral trainers who specialize in aggression rehab training, but also puppy and off-leash training. We love working with dogs – every breed, age and training challenge. We have a Board and Train program and we offer private one-on-one lessons, too. In addition, our boarding services are exclusive to our clients, and we have grooming services and a pet store in-house! Our clients need education and guidance around dog training and we are able to provide that for them. What makes us different is the way that we build community with our clients, neighborhood, and staff. I’m most proud of how as a business we have been able to stand by our ethics and values, and we always put the health and safety of the dogs, clients, and staff first.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I’m proud to have built a brand here in Cleveland that really focuses in on authenticity, connection, and community. We are exactly who we say we are! Which is to say: a small business made up of incredibly talented individuals whose identities are often sidelined within the dominant paradigm of our industry. Our staff is completely female, LGBTQ+, and minorities. We truly care about each and every being in the Boss K9 ecosystem – clients, dogs, and staff – and we demonstrate that through empathetic communication and continuous education & support.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
We believe that communication is vital to any healthy working relationship. We prioritize authenticity and compassionate leadership. My advice to other small business owners would be to always ask your staff for feedback, and stay open and receptive to ideas while also maintaining your own boundaries. That balance is possible!
