We were lucky to catch up with Anna Lenis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Anna, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
I started baking a traditional Venezuelan Christmas bread called Pan de Jamon. A rolled dough filled with ham, olives and raisins. Every time I was invited to a friends house I would bring that to share. So everyone loved it and people started to order from me. My first customer was a couple who ordered pan de jamon and a pumpkin pie for a Thanksgiving dinner. It was in Nov 2018. They were referred by some friends and told me they wanted to try my famous Venezuelan style ham bread.
One day I decided I wanted to bake also cakes, brownies, and cookies. I took some classes and then started to make cakes and sweets.
Today I specialize in custom cakes and edible art. But for the holiday season we always have our Venezuelan bread available!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Anna, an Italian-Venezuelan living in the USA for more than 20 years. I graduated in law school and worked as an attorney for many years, in Venezuela, but I always had an art vocation. I love to sculpt, craft, and creat, since I was a child. One day I decided I wanted to bake a decorate cakes, so I took some classes for that, started practicing, and embarked on this journey of the sugar craft.
Today, I’m the owner of Aroma Desserts and More, and I recreate my clients dreams on cakes so people can build memories on their special celebrations.
I am immensely grateful to all those who have placed their trust in me, my work and have supported me to get to where I am today. Grateful to my family because without them I couldn’t and they are my constant driving force; to my friends, who always encourage and support me; and of course, to my clients because for them I have grown, advanced, and am improving every day to serve them.
I’m very proud of my self because as an immigrant, I’ve learned not only a new language, also what started as a hobby today is my passion and then a business, and it’s very important to do what makes you happy. It’s like a dream come true.
My name is Anna Lenis and I am @aromadesserts
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Word of mouth! For me, this is how I started growing my clientele. People who ordered from us, recommended our products to their family and friends and that’s how we started. Today with the different platforms in social media, we can push that growth rate.
