We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Anna Feagan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Anna below.
Anna, appreciate you joining us today. Over the course of your career, have you seen or experienced your field completely flip-flop or change course on something?
Naturopathic medicine is founded on the core belief that our bodies have the ability to heal themselves given the proper support. We believe that a healthy terrain is the best protection against disease of all kinds. However, an increasing demand for mainstream recognition has driven my profession into a reliance on the “quick fixes” for disease – using supplements and medications to band aid over health issues.
Not soon after I was getting my feet on the ground in my practice, the COVID-19 pandemic swept through our nation. And with it came a widespread fear and insecurity that our bodies will not be able to heal from this infection. We were told to stay inside to avoid exposure. We were told to socially isolate. The very businesses that operate day in and day out to keep us healthy were asked to close their doors. This was the first year my clinic opened – and I could not believe that when faced with the threat of a virus we were encouraging people to forgo the habits that keep them healthy. My colleague/business partner and I decided to stick to our naturopathic roots and continue – now more than ever – to help people create a healthy terrain as we know this is the best defense against disease.
Throughout the pandemic we were able to help so many people improve their health and gain back some faith in their ability to fight this disease. I felt a major shift in our medicine and healthcare in general. It became increasingly obvious that when it comes to health – there are no shortcuts. There are no magic pills or injections to cure or protect you from disease. Staying healthy means doing the hard work of truly prioritizing your health. Staying healthy means embracing the principles that naturopathic medicine was founded on – using the most natural resources possible to support the foundations of your health. I was happy to see our industry make a shift back to those values, despite it taking a pandemic to do so.

Anna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Dr. Anna Feagan – a naturopathic doctor. I was drawn to naturopathic medicine while in college as a pre-medical student. As I was gaining more exposure to the conventional medical system I became disheartened. I felt that there was little focus on the actual health and wellbeing of patients, that practitioners were burned out and run down. The entire system seemed broken and I felt that my life would not be satisfying if I became a part of it.
At the time my sister was seeing a naturopathic doctor in Montana where she lived. She encouraged me to come out and shadow him to learn more about it. After two weeks there, I felt that I had found what I thought primary care medicine should be. I found a practitioner that had the health, time and energy for his patients. I found patients that felt seen and taken care of. I saw people actually heal.
After four years of naturopathic medical school and five years of practice – I can say I am truly grateful I chose this path. The inspiration for a better type of healthcare I found in Montana has come to life in my own private practice. I opened a clinic in UTC La Jolla with my best friend from medical schoo, Dr. Garek Ng, and we brought our joint philosophy of practice to life here. I specialize in treating chronic infections (mold, lyme, EBV, parasites, yeast) as well as helping to balance hormone health in patients (thyroid, adrenal, sex).
I use comprehensive lab anaylses in my practice to gather the most holistic and extensive view of a person’s health. I want to know how my patient’s are functioning on a physical, mental, physiological and cellular level. I take pride in designing health protocols specific to each person’s unique needs. Building a healthy foundation with diet and lifestyle changes is always at the core of these protocols. However, I use tailored supplementation, hormones, and intravenous therapies to treat patients often.
My clinic offers nutrient IV therapies as well as some more niche intravenous treatments. These include ozone therapy, phosphatidylcholine, and NAD+. The integration of these therapies into protocols accelerates patient results.

How’d you meet your business partner?
First year of medical school, we had to take a course on “Therapeutic Alliance”. This essentially was a course on empathic professional communication AKA “bedside manner”. We were randomly assigned a secret pen pal within the class with whom we were to complete assignments with online. The assignments involved alot of sharing and reflection of personal topics. It was meant to be anonymous.
One night, some of our classmates got together and threw a party. I had moved across the country to California and had no friends yet so I was eager to connect with my fellow classmates socially. As I was talking to one, Garek, he mentioned a few details about himself and I immediately recognized him as my pen pal. I couldn’t help but give myself away as well. We soon realized we have alot in common and became inseperable study buddies over the next four years. As early on as our second year of medical school we made the decision to open a practice together after graduation. Our friendship transitioned into a business partnership that has helped me grow my personal practice and career in way I never thought possible. I am not saying I couldn’t do it without him….but I certainly would never want to.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
My favorite strategy to grow clientele is to get out in the world and meet people! I love connecting with other wellness businesses and health minded people to grow my referral network and meet new people interested in naturopathic medicine. I have always found it easy to network, as truly love talking about my work.
