We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Anna Capra. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Anna below.
Anna, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
What did my parents do right? It truly would have to be my work ethic. I started working when I was 11 years old! My parents owned a bar + restaurant, so they “made” me wait tables every single day. Ever since I was 11 I’ve had a job. I knew if I wanted something, I had to go out and work for it. I would not be where I am today, or as successful as I am today without working for it. You either have work ethic or you don’t, so I’m thankful my parents enforced it!

Anna, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve been a hairstylist for 6 years now, which is amazing. Every year my love for this industry continues to grow. This year especially has been one to remember. I will never forget this moment when a client looked at me and said “what sets you apart from other hairdressers” and 4 years later, I can confidently say I set myself apart from other hairdressers. At work I’m not only there to color the clients hair, but I’m there to educate them. I see a client maybe 4-6 times a year, so the other 360 days they are at home by themselves with their hair. I educate them on how to style, product usage, hot tool temperatures, and over all scalp health. My biggest piece of advice in this career is don’t gatekeep! Tell everyone what you know, and why you know it. I finally opened up educational classes for other stylists, so they can not only deliver a bomb color but also some bomb education to their clients.
Also to anyone reading this, take the jump. It may be scary to try something new but it’s sooooo worth it.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Market yourself! The biggest piece of advice I can give is to be yourself! Once I started posting about real life content and did raw takes from behind the chair my business grew! Clients want to know you, and once they do, you form such a beautiful connection with them.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
It was right after Covid. I was off of work for 3 months, and finally the salon opened back up to take clients. The first week back I had 5 adjustments (when you have to fix someone’s hair) and I was DEFEATED. I had that “oh I’m the best” mentality, and when you get like that, you get HUMBLED. Well if you didn’t guess it, I got humbled. I was actually DEMOTED at work, and my entire mindset shifted. I was humiliated. So at this point in my career, I was back at the bottom. The very bottom. I wanted to quit doing hair, I was ready to throw in the towel. Then I realized I was having a “feel sorry for me pity party” and changed my mindset. I bought every education class under the sun, invested in myself, and started building myself back up. I went from a level 1 stylist to a level 4 stylist in a YEAR! Flash forward to now, I’m educating/teaching other stylists how to go from the bottom to the top. I tell them every single mistake I ever made so they don’t make them. Moral of the story: change your mindset, WORK HARD, and I promise you will be so successful.
