We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Anjola Remi-Afonja. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Anjola below.
Anjola, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
I manage my own social media. Because I am also a full-time student, I do not have a set social media schedule, but I like to post when I know people of my age group will be online. I also try to keep up with trending, sounds on Instagram as well as modern graphics that will engage my audience. While social media can sometimes be discouraging, it is the main source of new clients and customers for me, so I am very grateful for the exposure that it gives.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a full-time college student and self taught nail technician. I got into the kraft late 2019 as a high school student because I was searching for a hobby and I enjoyed getting my nails done. As a nail tech, I realize that my job goes beyond the art because I help navigate customers through new styles, bring them out of your comfort zone, and my nail area becomes a safe space where they can talk about different situations that may be going through. Because I am self taught, I pay attention to details very closely, and my main priority is to make sure my customers leave happy and satisfied. I often have a lot of returning customers because the bond we form allows them to trust me with nail designs that they may not be sure about otherwise. I am most proud about my progress because looking back on my work at the beginning, I have come a long way on my own and have learned a lot from my mistakes along the way. I would like prospective customers to know that my main priority is them and their satisfaction. I put my clients before myself so that I can produce the best work even if it is not something I am used to.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
At the beginning of my nail career, I was told that discounts and low prices was the best way to build client relationships. As a beginner, this was convenient because people loved cheap services, but I realize that charging my worth was the most valuable to me and my clients. Because my industry involves a lot of high-quality and expensive products, I have made sure to center my pricing around my expertise, as well as the cost of my products.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Unlike many businesses, nail techs do not need to have a lot of capital at the beginning. I started my business with $70 and I do believe that this was the best decision I could have made because dipping into my savings would have been a waste of money on expensive products that I may not have used. Because this is a creative business, one must focus their finances on products needed for their preferred Nail trends are cute to look at and replicate, I have learned to not spend a lot of money on new and trending products because my clients may not be interested in these things. No products aren’t exactly something you can return so the best thing to do is to slowly build up your inventory.
