We were lucky to catch up with Anji Anujin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Anji , thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The idea of Bury In Gold came to me and my now husband Frei while we were camping in the woods and headbanging to a song called Bury Me In Smoke by a band called Down. We really fell in love with each other because we loved the same metal music and the connection was just so magical. We posted the video of us rockin out to the song on Tiktok and it blew up. We knew this was gonna be a fun adventure and a cool love story if we combined forces and do something together! We got married and opened up our business 2 months apart in the same year! I’ve been piercing for quite a while and it was time for me to embark on my entrepreneurial journey in the US. We wanted to create a high-end piercing only studio where we embrace being unapologetically ourselves and help others do the same through the magic of body piercing and fine jewelry.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Anji and I was born in Mongolia 1992. I grew up in Berlin and now live in Seattle WA. I am a mother of two beautiful children and have been piercing for over 15 years now! I specialize in custom Ear Curations and helping clients style their Piercings. I first started piercing myself around the age of 14 since my love for metal music was so strong, I had the need to express myself differently from others and eventually people around me asked me to pierce them and I had become the piercer of the people! Clients come to Bury Me In Gold to adorn their bodies with beautiful ethically made fine jewelry, conflict free diamonds and precious gemstones. We exclusively work with BVLA, world’s highest quality gold body piercing jewelry. We are proud to be a Piercing only studio where people come in to style their piercings and celebrate individuality and the art of body adornment. The shop is run by a couple of heavy metal enthusiasts so expect a good dose of heavy metal music when you come in the studio!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Me and Frei both had quit our old jobs to give Bury Me In Gold our all. Things didn’t go as planned and we had lost our original retail spot to another company and it set us back by quite a lot. We didn’t have much money saved and things were looking pretty rough for our whole family! We held each other’s hands throughout the hard months of not knowing how to make it work but we continued putting our head down and grinding until we made everything work! When you have a good heart and are moving towards a goal, the universe has a way of supporting you in such magical ways I couldn’t find words to describe it. People started showed up in our lives, necessary funds to open the business found us and we truly think the power of our love and resilience had made it all happen for us. I’ve read in a book that before success find you, they push you to your limits to make sure you are really ready for it or not. We feel like time has really tested us and we pulled through together on the other side and now we look at all that we have created together, really are grateful in our hearts that we stayed strong and continued working hard for our dreams. We had created the most positive, supportive work environment for both ourselves and our employees and couldn’t be more proud of ourselves. We also are humbled to have created this spot that makes SO many people happy with how they look and what they see in the mirror when they look into it. Piercing goes deeper than the surface, it helps us feel confident, bold and brave. Or main goal at Bury Me In Gold is to make the world a happy place, one piercing at a time!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think the biggest factor in my success as a professional piercer was to be my true authentic self. I think staying true to my metalhead roots has made me stand out from the corporate bunch and makes people feel comfortable getting pierced by me. Me and Frei both play music and are deeply connected with the music industry, I think people like that a lot about us that this is who we are, what we breathe and live for. Metal music and body art!
