Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Anjel Britt. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Anjel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
I kept on learning, and working alongside other pro and amateur photographers (and professional models) who have differing interests and points of view … and we shot together in a wide variety of situations for many years.
I hired an inspiring business coach, who taught photographers about ‘mindsets’ even more than about business approaches or concerns – that was such a great help!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started with headshots – but I was once a yoga model, a yoga teacher, and as a graduate of the University of London, taught school in London, England, for many years. In 2005 I came to the California coast and became busy as a ”people” Photographer, and teacher of Boudoir, Portrait and Fashion photography.
It certainly makes me different that I worked for years in front of a camera, around the world, before stepping behind it – it means I can understand and plan for how my women subjects probably feel, too.
I’m proud that I have been able to serve women, making them feel beautiful through Boudoir photography as well as supporting the relationships of children and couples – making wall at that makes them feel secure and reminds them how loved they are.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I have used Google – and Facebook for showing myself to families … also Linkedin for business people who wish to benefit from Branding or just headshots. I actually have used MeetUp more than anything to attract other photographers, students and women who want to model for my classes and shoots.
I have found that if people have a good experience, they often tell others – and that’s where my referrals have mostly come from. So my advice is ,do the most you can for people.
If you don’t care about them, learn to care about them. Because that’s what really counts.
On the flip side, a few people will never appreciate you enough or have bad manners, and you can’t let them drag you down.
Imagine yourself already successful when you are starting out. How would ”future you” respond?
Then make that happen.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
I have learned to make my approach and my photographs great, and I print them in the best lab in this great country. I practiced with multiple shoots per week, with all new people most of the time, for years and took on lots or editing.
I enjoy retouching and never send to another professional.
I’ve been learning from others, asking questions, taking courses, and worked on it all with others – with a long experience now! I work alone now but have loved so many colleagues to whom I am very grateful,
