We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Anita Martin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Anita, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you scale up? What were the strategies, tactics, meaningful moments, twists/turns, obstacles, mistakes along the way? The world needs to hear more realistic, actionable stories about this critical part of the business building journey. Tell us your scaling up story – bring us along so we can understand what it was like making the decisions you had, implementing the strategies/tactics etc.
I was constantly putting out content and going live on social media on a consistent schedule and I burnt out really fast. I was beating myself up about taking a break. Then realized I actually need to take a step back to see what I could be doing differently, networking and marketing. It improved my clientele tremendously.
My scale up happened as a result of the various actions that I had to take. I don’t think it was ever one thing. But, my ah ha moment happened when I realized i wasn’t going to get my clients from medical referrals as i initially thought. I did and still do a lot of networking and collaborations with other business women. I have lived in Baltimore for almost three years now and I have been fortunate to meet some really awesome people.
My favorite and most effective strategy I have used is Guerilla Marketing (unconventional actions that aim to attract the most attention possible) Being a sex coach and having a multi-faceted personality, I had to find tactics that motivated me. Nothing conventional was working for me. I passed out condoms with my business logo on them. I went on podcast and webinars to talk about sexual enhancements and techniques. I host and co-host live sex parties as the sex educator. Now I am know in my community as the person to have the sex talk with.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Certified Clinical Sexuality Coach. I help women and couples identify and experience the pleasure they want. My fifteen years of experience in occupational therapy have been the foundation of my professional career of connecting with people and being a problem solver. When I was growing up I didn’t have anyone to answer my questions about sex. I had to figure things out on my own. In early relationships I didn’t know what a healthy relationship looked like, this eventually caused the end of my marriage. People have always come to me to share their experiences or for validation of their sexual encounters. The main thing I want potential clients to understand is, most people have the same problems. Don’t be insecure, your struggle is probably typical to everyone else. I produce transformational results!

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Everyone says the same thing. “You have to do it!” I suggest starting slow if that makes you comfortable. I started with printed ads that I made, then I started adding my pictures to the ads and now I make quick 1 minute videos. You have to let your confidence build on your time, not others.
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
I posted my business ad on a fetish community website. I figured I would only get a lot of offers for unsolicited sex (which i did)) but I also got lots of serious inquiries which turned into new customers.
