We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Anita Chen Fu a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Anita, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Absolutely, I find immense joy and fulfillment in my creative pursuits as an artist. The freedom to express myself and bring my ideas to life is truly rewarding. While I appreciate the stability that a regular job can offer, the passion and satisfaction I derive from my artistic endeavors make it a choice I wouldn’t trade easily.
Moreover, the challenges and uncertainties that come with a creative path fuel my growth and push me to explore new horizons. The ability to connect with others through my art and evoke emotions is a unique and gratifying experience that a regular job might not provide. Though the road may be less predictable or stable, the journey as a creative individual is filled with discovery, learning, and the excitement of turning imagination into reality.
Additionally, I find great fulfillment in sharing my passion for art through teaching. Guiding others on their creative journeys and witnessing the spark of inspiration in my students brings an added layer of joy. It’s incredibly rewarding to contribute to the artistic development of others and create a supportive community where ideas can flourish. Teaching art not only enhances my own skills but also adds a meaningful dimension to my creative pursuits. While the idea of a regular job may cross my mind, the unique rewards of being an artist and educator make the creative path my preferred choice.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Certainly, there’s an aspect of the creative journey that might be challenging for those outside the creative realm to fully grasp. This involves the constant need to evolve alongside society and technology. Creatives must regularly think outside the box, embracing change and adapting to new tools and trends.
Furthermore, while passion fuels my creative endeavors, it’s important to emphasize that success as an artist requires more than just passion. Discipline is a key factor. The ability to set goals, meet deadlines, and maintain a structured work ethic is crucial. It’s not solely about inspiration; consistent effort and dedication are essential for refining and advancing one’s skills.
Navigating the dynamic landscape of the creative field involves finding a balance between passion and discipline. Recognizing and embracing this interplay is vital for overcoming challenges and achieving enduring success as an artist.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
From my perspective, the most effective way for society to support artists and creatives, and foster a thriving creative ecosystem is by acknowledging the value of their work and compensating them fairly. Recognizing that creative endeavors contribute significantly to our society’s development is crucial. This involves understanding that, despite the often unstable nature of creative jobs, they constitute proper careers with immense importance.
Paying artists fair prices for their work not only validates their contributions but also enables them to sustain themselves and continue producing meaningful content. Moreover, acknowledging that creativity plays a vital role in recording our history adds another layer of significance to the work of artists. Society can further support the creative community by providing platforms, funding, and opportunities that enable artists to pursue their passions and contribute to the cultural richness of our society.
