We recently connected with Anita C Powell, Msc.D. and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Anita C thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
It was in 1998. My twin daughters were Sophomores at a Michigan college and I left 19 years of employment ~ scared and on a wing and a prayer. No job, husband, boyfriend, savings, well except around $5,000. I had a 401k account.
I’m going to go back in time.
Ever since I was a little girl, I have always had a strong desire to understand my relationship with God, Nature, the Universe, and with each other. For years, when I would have conversations with others about God, and Jesus they would share with me their belief. I would always say, “I’m from the State of Missouri, the Show Me State. God’s gonna have to show me.” I needed to know from God for myself the connection.
After years of studying various Spiritual philosophies and religions, I was introduced to Metaphysics, Meditation, and how God lived within us in the 1980’s. I knew I was home…this is the belief that resonated with me. I began meditating and at some point, I would hear (I call it a feel/heard) that I would be leaving my job because that’s how I’ll grow to understand my relationship with God. That frightened me, so I stopped meditating, as I thought, “I wasn’t about to leave my job with benefits, a nice salary. That’s all I had raising my Girls. At some point, perhaps a couple of years later, I began meditating again, because I enjoyed it so. I still heard the same message, but I didn’t put too much emphasis on it.
In 1979, I was blessed with being hired by the Wayne County Probation Department. My baby girls were one and a half years old. I was a single mom and sole supporter of my twins. I felt so important. We were going to get off ADC/Welfare and I was somebody. I was a “Receptionist”. I had a title! Shortly thereafter, I was introduced to Metaphysics.
In 1994, after serving 15 years in Probation (Pre-Commitment Services), I was working as a Confidential Executive Secretary and my supervisor decided to retire. I knew I had learned all I could working in pre-commitment services, so I decided to transfer to Commitment (prison) services. Working as an Assistant Resident Unit Manager secretary behind the gates, I had the opportunity to chat with the brothers who were housed in the facility. Establishing a relationship, they would gift me with art they made. I asked these brothers how long had they known of this tremendous gift they had. No matter who I asked or when I asked the question, I would be given the same answer “I didn’t know what I had until I was forced to sit still in my cell and go within. That’s also when and where I found my peace”. I didn’t know it then, from 1994 – 1998 the TAPN2U Movement was being born.
As the deep desire continued, it came to be in 1998 that I left my employment. Before I did, my friend and colleague, Cathy tried her best to get me to sign a Waive Rights Leave of Absence. That’s a document that says if I wanted to come back to work within a year I could. I said to Cathy that I couldn’t do that. If I did, I would be stepping into this journey with a lack of faith. I couldn’t leave perpetrating a fraud. Yes, I was afraid, but my soul desire to experience and grow in my faith & understanding was stronger than my fear. I knew this was my path. and so I left.
Shortly after leaving MDOC, I experienced what I thought was a severe financial hardship. I say what I thought because during that time, I didn’t have too much food in my apartment, I didn’t know what I was doing; or what I was supposed to do other than grow my faith. I was helping out with my Grandfather who had suffered a severe stroke, but the agency I was to receive compensation from stiffed us workers and I was without money. No one knew of my plight. I couldn’t let anyone know. My pride wouldn’t allow that. For me to leave a Good job and end up with nothing…I just couldn’t admit that to anyone. However, at that time, people would come to invite me to lunch. I was able to get to places. A couple of times, the owners of the apartment building would say as a token of appreciation, I didn’t have to pay rent for a given month and could make it up at a later date. I say thought severe financial hardship because I’ve since learned that this sparrow was always taken care of. I was just blind to what I did have because I was focused on what I didn’t have.
Since leaving 19 years employment, I’ve become an Independent Author seven times, I’ve traveled to Egypt and Thailand to share my Spoken Word, I have received awards from across the globe for humanitarian work. I’m founder of the Engai Creative Thought Academy/Poetry & Music Publishing, TAPN2U Movement, LLC, TAPN2U Global Peace Partner movement, Empowerment thru Spoken Word Poetry – TAPN2U (A Help to Heal) Global Foundation. People have said that I’ve touched their hearts, uplifted them, and helped them with their beliefs about themselves.
My family and I achieved a fundraising campaign and because of that, a school now rests on the soil of the Kondui B community in Burkina Faso, West Africa. I do not say these things to impress anyone. I say them to impress upon someone, when we trust (even in the midst of fear) we are like the sparrow and are taken care of. If we have faith the size of a mustard seed (with NO INNER DOUBT) it shall be done. Today, I understand my relationship with God. Cozy, Intimate, and Comfortable…Closer than the Breath I breathe. If someone were to ask me what do I love to do? I would say…helping people get closer to God by helping them get closer to themselves.
Anita C, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a Mom and Grandmom. I have been a poet for as long as I can remember and wanted to make people happy. How I got into Metaphysics, and coaching was simply because I wanted to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Life has as with many people taught us the pain of loneliness, helplessness, etc. I am where I am today because I want to share with people that we are never alone. That the Power Presence Love & Essence of God live within each of us. I believe if we truly believed that suicide rates would decline; domestic violence would be reduced tremendously. There would definitely be more Peace & Love in this world. I want to help people address what I call Karmic Debt (self-limited belief of not enough – confidence/imposter syndrome; not deserving – perpetual regret/guilt and not worthy – self unforgiving/guilt). I call it a Karmic Debt because what we think about ourselves is reflected on the outside of us; that’s simply the Universal Law of Correspondence and Cause & Effect. It’s a debt because we owe ourselves to put our limited self-belief in its place and embrace our Divinity. There’s no need to get rid of it because it is very much a part of us and helps to keep us humble. So it serves its purpose. We just have to learn to put it where it belongs. I believe what sets me apart is what I do is a way of life for me. It rests within my Creed. I integrate energy principles (i.e. vibration equation), wellness & wellbeing, traditional and complementary alternative medicine practices. Products are “Rhythmic Reverb customized mantras (the Voice of Your Soul), self-recovery cards (I learned so much about myself using these cards), energy poetry, programs, workshops, and classes. The Metaphysical coaching services are based on my life experience and tools, etc., that have been developed over the years and which I’ve used and continue to use in the activities of my daily living.
Being called “The Door Opener”, I wish to share the message, “Get to Know Your House” with others.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is recognizing that Self-Recovery is a continuum throughout life and by tapping into our creative (which we all are), we are tapping into the essence of God.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I was shy about connecting with others on Social media at first. Then I began attending various conferences, seminars, and workshops. I learned so many of us are shy in this area and are simply looking for support. I believe my audience was built upon supporting others. Attending workshops, etc., and engaging in the platform. Reading what others post and clicking the “love” button.
My advice would be to join groups and engage. It’s not necessary to engage all the time. Simply keep in mind why we post. Every person posts something for a connection. Read another’s post and click the “love” button. It really comes down to…treat others the way we want to be treated. Having sincerity in wanting to see people progress and succeed will build an audience. As I state in my Poetic Affirmation “Little One” when we help someone reach the peak of their dream, we reach the pinnacle of our own.
