Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Angie Yoo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Angie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
Everyone knows that most weddings take place on the weekend Saturday and Sunday, which means that these are the days that wedding vendors work the most. Our industry (the wedding industry) has a reputation of over charging couples simply because they can! I wanted to be different. I started Beloved Events Co. in 2020 and we quickly became a reputable company in the wedding world. In 2022 alone we worked more than 60 events! Our team grew from just two employees to ten.
As a Christian in this industry, I wanted to do something different. Something that would make us stand out, but also something that would keep me in check from becoming money hungry. That is why for the year 2023 I enforced the no working on Sunday’s rule for our company. Sunday’s are meant for Sabbath, and I was missing out on feeding my spirit and fellowshipping with my church community because I had been prioritizing working these events. I knew this also meant that I would potentially be rejecting almost half of the business that came our way, which was a HUGE hit to our finances, but I knew it would be worth it. Money is great to have, but it isn’t everything to me. Money comes and goes, and when I really need it God has always provided for me. This was something I wanted to do to honor and thank God for His provision in the form of Beloved.
With the Sabbath rule in place for Beloved this year I can say I have no regrets! Our team members and myself get to attend and serve in our churches. Fellow Christian vendors have expressed their support and admiration for the decision. Although we have had to turn away many couples, this is also a great opportunity for us to promote other vendors!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
When I chose Public Relations as my major, I knew I didn’t want to actually do PR work. I was more interested in the skills the major had to offer me: social media management, brand identity, business management, journalism and communications. I interned with a Wedding planning company my sophomore year in college and I fell in love with the job at my first wedding. I couldn’t believe that witnessing two people committing themselves to each other in front of their friends and family was a job. As an extroverted creative and also a type A person, this job was the perfect fit for me since I was able to help organize and run several things while also designing floral pieces, and the best part was meeting SO MANY people. I was encouraged to begin my own business after graduating and Beloved was founded a year after.
At Beloved Events Co. we offer the following services: Event Design, Event Planning, Event Floral and Candle Rentals in the Los Angeles and Orange counties. We have three different packages for Planning/Coordination. We can either help you plan your wedding from the beginning (finding a venue and setting a budget) or just coordinate the actual wedding day (+ your rehearsal). We offer floral services for any and all types of events.
We are different from other Wedding planners because we are a one stop shop! Normally you’d have to hire a coordinator and a florist, but we offer both services in-house! This makes communication for our couples easier and the design and flow of the wedding more cohesive.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social Media Management was one of the courses I took for my major PR. I learned that it was important to have a brand image to really establish your social media presence. Our main social media platform is Instagram and I’m proud to say that we’ve steadily grown to 4,300 followers since we were established in 2020. My main observation was that other wedding planning businesses were basically all business, and they shared beautiful photos from their weddings. I wanted to have a more personal approach and share tips and stories that would engage the audience. I think it worked because soon everyone knew it was Angie who owned Beloved Events Co.! We grew a following really quickly that weren’t just our circle of friends and their friends. Now about 65% of our couples find us through Instagram!
For a strong social media presence, brainstorm your brand identity. Some questions you can ask yourself are:
1. What colors will represent your brand
2. Will you be more formal or more personal when posting
3. What kind of information will you be sharing
I’ve learned it helps to be consistent when putting out content. No one wants to follow an account that is helpful or inspirational once or twice a month. Post weekly, daily if possible to really engage with your audience!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Reputations are very important in this business since everyone knows everyone. It’s a small bubble we operate in, the Asian American Orange County bubble. I think what helped us build up our reputation and set us apart from other planners is that we are friendly and we get personal. We genuinely care about our couples, and their wedding isn’t just another paycheck. We hate cookie cutter weddings, and want to take the time to really get to know our couples and make sure that their wedding day is a reflection of who they are! We don’t set a strict start date for contact since we know how stressful things can be during the planning process and we want to be there for them. This is a special day that they are trusting us with and also giving us the honor of participating in, and we want to make sure that they know that~
