Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Vogel
Hi Angie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started out professionally as a pastry chef, working in fine dining. I was able to get a lot of experience at the best places in Philadelphia, like Le Bec Fin and the Four Seasons Hotel, and I learned so much about hospitality.
You wouldn’t think hospitality has much to do with the martial arts business, but there is so much transfer. Making people feel comfortable and welcome is the first goal we have when new potential members come in to try out our academy.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the scariest things was making the jump from professional chef, to full time Jiu Jitsu instructor, and eventually school owner. I was in the restaurant industry from age 18 until 38. As you can imagine, leaving a career after 20 years as I was approaching my 40’s was pretty nerve wracking.
My first goal was to be proficient in the art, and then work on my instruction. My coach/husband/business partner is a phenomenal Jiu Jitsu instructor, and he has been a major influence on my teaching style. I did have some experience with mentoring in the culinary field, which was super helpful, but honing in on simplifying techniques and building game plans for our students, has been the real bread and butter for our business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Jiu Jitsu Company was founded by myself and my husband over three years ago. We specialize in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but also have classes in Muay Thai, Yoga, Wrestling and Judo. I think specifically we are known for what we call “Organized Jiu Jitsu”, which basically means we approach teaching martial arts academically.
Additionally what separates us from our competition is the culture of our school. We emphasize the problem solving aspects of Jiu Jitsu, and market it towards more cerebral members who are interested in not only the physical aspects of jiu jitsu, but the mental exercise as well. It generally makes for a much safer training floor, and honestly just more fun!
We recently expanded the merchandise brand, Jiu Jitsu Co Fight Wear and Après-Roll [a cheeky nod to Après-Ski lifestyle and Apparel]. While that is relatively new, we’ve already been able to secure a partnership with one of the most notable Jiu Jitsu resellers in e-commerce, so we are looking forward to what next year brings us!
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Genuinely, I get the most happiness and satisfaction out of a job well done. I like to put my best foot forward, and when I can make people feel at home, and comfortable.
In my personal life, my most joyful moments are laughing with my hubby, and relaxing with our cats.
