We recently connected with Angie Tovar and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Angie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
I went from working for someone to opening a beauty suite to acquiring a store front in a course of 4 months so it is automatically assumed it came easy. I feel many don’t see that I did work 2 jobs for 2 years, followed by working for someone for almost 7 years before I took the leap. Yes from the outside it looks like it has been all money coming in. Unfortunately it took a lot to get to where my career is at… time away from home, working 10-12 hr day’s and a lot of money to get the storefront situated. I would love to say it’s been a piece of cake but it’s been the complete opposite. Now if on top of that you add that there’s a lot of lash artists in the industry, as well as some of them being extremely talented building a steady clientele can also be a challenge!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well I’ve been a licensed esthetician and lash artist for almost 8 years. I currently have about 50+ revolving clients that I see on an every 2 week rotation. My true love is working behind the chair! I know my clients as if they were my close friends! I’ve been a part of many exciting events and they also in turn have shared many events in my life. February of 2022 I acquired my store front and I went from being a lash artist to a landlord. I started with 5 beauty suites and will be a total of 8 by the end of the summer. My goal is to provide a space at a price lower than most name brand suites where other business owners can welcome their own clients.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
My business partner is actually my husband! The reason he became my business partner was because my name was already on another suite so when it came time for the financial part I needed him to be able to sign the lease on our storefront. Funny thing is he had no idea what I really did! But he heard my business plan, saw the numbers as well as the potential increase in income and said ok I’ll do it with you. He’s helped me grow and spruce up my new work home.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
I was an administrative assistant for a state funded job for 14 years, lashes were a side gig that I was going to do for 1-2 years max. Little did I know I would fall in love with it. Quit my job after 2 years and never looked back. I now do a job I love every single day!
