We recently connected with Angie Thomson and have shared our conversation below.
Angie , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Along with taking care of clients, taking care of our team is one of the most important things we can do as leaders. Looking back on your journey, did you have a boss that was really great? Maybe you can tell us about that boss and what made them a wonderful person to work for?
Two of the most impactful leaders I’ve had in my life have been my pastors, Clint and Mary Sprague. Their spiritual leadership has helped me both personally, and in my role as a business owner. Clint and Mary led our pre-marital counseling, did our wedding, have taught us Godly principles on both marriage and parenting, and they both encouraged me (and my husband also) to start our businesses! They have guided and lived by example, on how to lead with humility, authenticity, and most importantly to keep a tunnel vision on what God has called us to do. Distractions can try to get in the way, but when you stay focused on your MISSION, God is with you and will bless you every step of the way.
Learning from them on how to handle adversity, challenges, conflict, growth, all while staying humble and leaning in to hear from the Lord among the other distractions…that has been one of the BIGGEST factors in helping me as a business owner. Have humility, integrity, be authentic, loving and not divisive.
Luke 14:11 “For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” What we have is not our own, our gifts are from the Lord. Everything we have is because of Him, and Clint and Mary have modeled this for me. I will always be forever grateful for their leadership in my life.
Angie , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I love Jesus with all my heart, am married to my absolute dream guy (20 years in May!), we have 4 incredible kids, and we both have our own businesses. He runs Maverick Outdoors, a landscaping company, and I own Thomson Team Training (TTT), women’s personal training in a group setting.
When I was in college, the Lord was clear. He said, “I want you to learn how I created your body, and how it’s designed, and then I want you to be able to teach other women how to take care of their bodies.” As a lifelong athlete, I knew the spiritual/mental/physical benefits of health and fitness, and I was excited to learn and share my knowledge with others. I received my B.S. in Exercise Physiology, and have studied to earn multiple certifications on how to move and function well. Right out of college, I worked in corporate fitness for 14 years as a personal trainer, and then the Lord was clear that it was time to start Thomson Team Training.
Thomson Team Training provides personal training in a group, so each woman has a customized workout tailored to their fitness level, medical history, and to their specific goals. Our mission is to Empower, Encourage and Equip women to be all that God has called them to be! Our amazing community of women join together daily, and we get to work! Health is spirit/mind/body, and we strive to provide more than a workout for our ladies. They become more confident in who they are, and they form beautiful and authentic friendships that impact them well beyond the walls of the gym. MORE THAN A WORKOUT.
Ultimately, we all want to feel confident about ourselves. We seek to believe the TRUTH about what our Creator says about us, and we work hard in the gym…so when we face challenges outside of the gym, we know we are not alone. God is with us, our community is with us, and we can do ALL things through Christ who gives us strength.
Building women up, watching them be able to do things they didn’t think they could do, and being a small part of all that God is doing in their lives will never ever get old. It’s an honor and incredibly humbling to love on our women, pray with them, cry with them, cheer for them, and watch them live their lives to the fullest! THIS IS OUR WHY at TTT.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Humility, integrity, kindness, and hard work. This industry can be competitive and cut throat. Be different, be kind, be gracious, have integrity and do what you say you’re going to do, cheer for others when they succeed. Don’t look at others as competition. Support them. Build them up. Don’t cut them down, don’t speak negatively about them. Take the high road. God will bless you for it, and He will protect you in it. Work hard, don’t get weary in the small things, stay diligent in loving people well. Love people well, and your bills will get paid. Don’t focus on the financials, focus on the eternal perspective.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Loving people well, and finding a team of trainers that can do this alongside you. My incredible team (Jana, Chrissy, and Jaclyn) are huge blessings to me and to our clients! They say YES to our mission every single day, and they jump in head first to help women feel confident about who God has made them to be. Be there for your clients. Love them, pray for them, be there when they’re struggling and when they’re succeeding. Doing this authentically will show them that you truly do care for them. They will share this with others. I tell my clients all the time that them sharing the TTT love with others is our #1 marketing tool and the biggest compliment we could receive. This is how we grow, this is how we reach more women. Lives are changing, and my team and I are forever grateful for this opportunity to be a part of this amazing community!
