We were lucky to catch up with Angie Soul recently and have shared our conversation below.
Angie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I aim to build a legacy of hope. Some of the things I experienced in my life since childhood were painful. The hand I was dealt brought a slew of challenges and I could’ve easily become a product of my environment, but I’ve always had a strong support system that helped me to flourish.
When I’m gone, I hope people remember me for my compassion and resilience. I want to be remembered as a person who loved freely, worked hard, and paid it forward any chance that presented itself. A person that felt like their safe space because as I got older in life, I struggled with feeling safe and I’ve been chasing that ever since. Creating a safe space for others fills a void that I’ve felt since childhood.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
HR Manager by day. Blogger by night. I always make fun of myself and say that I am a walking contradiction. It’s an interesting balance between having a career that is so analytical but having a passion that is purely artistic. However, I’ve come to realize that both areas serves my overall purpose, which is to help others. Human Resources allows me to advocate for employees while ensuring the protection of the company, while blogging allows me to nurture my first love, writing. I believe what truly separates me from other bloggers is my uncanny ability to connect with my readers on such an emotional level. I take my readers on a journey of triumphs and defeats, and I like to remain completely transparent and vulnerable through it all. It’s not always easy but there is something very special about shared healing and showing up for others in such an impactful way.
Ang Meets Soul was birthed in 2019 after I suffered a missed miscarriage. I had to undergo surgery to remove the embryo and suffered complications from it. The journey after that experience led to on a self searching healing journey and my blog became an open journal for others to read. In my healing, I realized that I helped others to heal. It’s been a while since I released a blog post as now I am a mother to a beautiful 2 year old girl and she demands my time and attention. However, I keep my blog alive through Instagram and my content there.
I’m just so humbled and grateful for the continuous support. I’ve won Best of the Bay for Best Blogger two years in a row and honestly baffled that people actually support my constant outpouring of vulnerability. Now I am shifting my focus on expanding my writing and I am in the early stages of drafting a self reflection book. I’ve also recently collaborated with Spoken Black Girl magazine and an article about motherhood is scheduled to release in February 2024.
How did you build your audience on social media?
From my personal experience, there’s no real formula in building a social media presence besides being authentic and simply showing up. I feel people are so focused on perfection and content strategy, and those are great skills to hone in but at the end of the day, it needs to be believable. Your audience is better at spotting a fraud than you think, and if you’re not authentic and love what you do, it will show in your content.
I’ve struggled with consistency due to the business of my own personal life but the beautiful aspect of my audience is that they have seen me through all stages of my life; I’ve taken them on my journey through the highs and lows. This has allowed my audience to feel a deeper connection to me which has driven loyalty towards my content.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is having the ability to stir emotions within my audience. After all, art is meant to make you feel something. It’s passion and emotion, and if I can make someone’s day better just by reading something I’ve shared, then I’ve done my job. Art is love. Art is healing.
