We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Angie K. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Angie below.
Alright, Angie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
The only other passion I’ve had besides music has been being a mechanic. The first job I had in that world was at a mustang only salvage yard. My boss was really tough on everyone but he had this way of making you feel so much more capable. He’d ask me to go pull a random part off a car or freight an engine to Canada and tell me to just kind of figure it out. When I did something wrong he’d really let me know too. There was no excuses with him because he truly believed I was capable of really anything… I just had to believe in myself and figure it out. As hard as it was to work there, it truly was one of the greatest learning experiences of my life. I started to deeply understand the value critical thinking. The skill of being able to solve a problem or figure something out without a set path or directions really helped me throughout my entire life. Especially in the indie world of making music.

Angie , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a country artist and songwriter living in Nashville, TN. I was born in a country in Central America called El Salvador and moved with my family when I was 11. I was drawn to country music because it felt like it’s where everything about me just belonged. There are so many badass women and men in country music, from George Strait to Miranda Lambert… and I’ll never forget seeing Gretchen Wilson ripping up mud on a four-wheeler in the Redneck Woman music video. I just felt like almost every song felt like a person I wanted to hang out with. People that believe in working hard and building something meaningful.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
This is going to sound a little cheesy, but truly my biggest mission lately has been to follow the joy. When I first started playing music for a living I had a bit of a chip on my shoulder – I had this mentality that I was going to just work harder than everyone. And honestly, I feel like I did for a while. I was on the road nonstop. But as I got older I realized that true long term success has to do with working smarter, not harder. As I stared to lean into that truth I kind of felt my shoulders drop. Things felt lighter. Like I was working a fun puzzle vs carrying a heavy load. Once I started saying yes to things that felt good, and no to things that didn’t I started to see a much easier and beautiful path open up. It felt like opportunities fell out of thin air. When I say going toward the joy and feeling good, I don’t mean I don’t still put in work. I just put in work when the goal feels wonderful and the vision is clear. It makes hard work feel exciting instead of dragging on. I don’t know if this will work for everyone, I just know when I started filtering questions in my career with “does it feel good” my life got a whole lot better and more fulfilling.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
For most of my writing career I’ve been told about a book called ‘The Artist’s Way’. I wish I had listened to those suggestions sooner. Truly one of the most impactful books I’ve ever read. It has kind of homework for artists and creatives. One of them is to write in a journal (stream of consciousness), three pages everyday. Then one of my favorite things it asks you to do is to take yourself on an ‘artist date’ once a week. This has to be by yourself and has to be something you WANT to do. Like going to a museum, or going for a walk. It is absolutely incredible the magic of asking ourselves the question of what we want to do. So many of us haven’t asked that in a long time.
