We recently connected with Angie and have shared our conversation below.
Angie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
For my Graduating BFA gallery, I discussed the topic of mental health as a theoretical concept. especially after the pandemic and how it negatively affected the public during that period. During opening night, I connected with viewers and had one-on-one conversations with people experiencing mental health issues, whether it was during the pandemic or after.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a fine artist, specifically a painter, and dabble in a bit of photography. I got into painting at a very young age and just never stopped painting. My paintings delve into social and theoretical topics such as mental health in a narrative manner. One of my proudest moments was showcasing my work in my university gallery because it felt like it set a precedent of the many galleries to come.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
In my opinion, the most rewarding aspect is slowly seeing your work come alive. I feel like most artists would choose the final result as the most rewarding, but for me, I feel like the process of creating and stepping back a few times, adding or subtracting details, and completely trusting the process is the most rewarding.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
People assume that creative individuals are born with the talent already, when it takes days, months, and years to form and get skilled in creating. Viewers will only see the final result, but never get the chance to see the numerous previous attempts and silly mistakes.
My advice is to never be ashamed of your previous attempts, and see them as a marker of how skilled you are so far. The journey is more important than the destination.
