We recently connected with Angelo Metz and have shared our conversation below.
Angelo, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I am fortunate enough to earn a living from my creative work. I was 15 years old when I earned my first paycheck for a music performance. That propelled me to pursue music as a full time career. I had been studying guitar since age of six, and kept studying until I graduated with a Doctoral degree from USC in 2006. My academic and professional network are still growing, bringing enough opportunities to allow me to dedicate myself exclusively to my music career. Of course I went thru some rough patches, like during the covid shut down, and had to find alternative income sources. Nowadays my income comes mainly from live performance, studio work, writing and producing, and teaching private lessons.

Angelo, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Getting into the music business was a natural progression for me. My mother is a music teacher, and I grew up around musicians. I have my own production studio, and offer all related services. Recording, mixing, mastering, arranging, composing and teaching, remotely and in person. I’m also available as a hired gun for live performances and studio work. I have a large collection of instruments and recording gear, all available to my clients. I have a strong background in several styles, including but not limited to Jazz, Brazilian, Latin, Electronic, Pop and Rock.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The general public should support local talent, by attending live shows, buying music and merchandise directly from artists, It’s also important to be conscious of the situation in the music industry, where artists are being exploited by major conglomerates such as Spotify.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being in the music business is bringing joy to the audiences, and of course making music and constantly learning and improving my music skills.
