We were lucky to catch up with Angelo Flowers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Angelo, thanks for joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
Spoony Candle Co. started in the quiet moments of 2020 when the world slowed down, and I found myself craving calm and comfort at home. I’ve always loved creating spaces that feel intentional — where scent, sound, and light work together to help you breathe a little easier. What began as a personal ritual to manage stress and reconnect with myself slowly evolved into something bigger.
At first, I was just experimenting. I ordered small bags of soy wax, a few fragrance oils, and a starter kit of wicks and jars. My first few batches were a mix of trial, error, and late-night research sessions on wick sizes and fragrance loads. But there was something deeply grounding about the process — the balance of science and creativity, the patience it required, and the sensory reward of lighting a candle you made with your own hands.
As friends and family began asking for candles of their own, I realized Spoony Candle Co. could be more than a hobby. I spent months researching suppliers, testing formulas, and learning everything I could about burn performance and scent throw. I wanted the brand to reflect both quality and meaning — candles that didn’t just smell good, but felt like a moment of care.
From there, it became about building the foundation: developing my brand identity, designing labels, photographing products, and launching the website. Each small step felt monumental — from creating my first batch that sold out in a weekend, to packaging orders at my kitchen table.
Looking back, it wasn’t one big leap but a series of intentional steps fueled by curiosity and care. Every candle I poured became a reminder that the simplest rituals — lighting a wick, taking a breath, being present — can change the atmosphere around you. That’s the heart of Spoony Candle Co.

Angelo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Angelo Flowers, and I’m the founder and maker behind Spoony Candle Co., a small-batch home fragrance brand built on the belief that scent can shape mood, memory, and ritual. I started Spoony Candle Co. with a simple goal: to create candles and wax melts that encourage people to slow down, ground themselves, and enjoy everyday moments of calm.
I’ve always been drawn to the art of creating atmosphere. Long before I ever poured my first candle, I was curating spaces that felt peaceful and intentional — a good playlist, a clean space, and a scent that lingered just enough to make it feel like home. When I discovered candle making, it felt like a natural extension of that. I spent months studying fragrance chemistry, testing wax formulas, and learning how different oils interact to create both comfort and longevity.
Spoony Candle Co. offers hand-poured candles and wax melts made with a high-quality soy blend and premium fragrance oils. Every scent is designed to tell a story or capture a mood — from cozy, bookish blends that pair perfectly with a quiet evening read, to bright, citrus-forward scents that feel like opening a window on a summer morning. Beyond fragrance, I focus on craftsmanship and intentional design, from the label details to the burn performance.
What sets Spoony Candle Co. apart is the emotional layer behind each product. My brand was built on care and connection, not mass production. Each candle is made by hand, in small batches, with the same attention and purpose I had when I first started. My customers often tell me my candles make them feel seen — that they light them during their morning routines, study sessions, or as part of a wind-down ritual. That means more to me than anything.
I’m most proud of how personal this journey has remained. Spoony Candle Co. has grown, but it’s still rooted in storytelling, quality, and sincerity. I want people to know that every scent I create comes from a place of intention and artistry. My hope is that each candle or melt becomes a part of someone’s story — a small ritual that reminds them to pause, breathe, and enjoy being home.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Connection has always been at the heart of Spoony Candle Co. From the beginning, I wanted my brand to feel personal — like a conversation between me and the people who invite my candles into their homes. I stay in touch through storytelling and authenticity. On social media, I share behind-the-scenes moments, the candle-making process, and reflections about slowing down and creating space for yourself. It’s not just about selling a product; it’s about building a relationship rooted in care, creativity, and trust.
As a Black, gay business owner, I understand how meaningful representation can be. I’ve seen how visibility inspires connection, and that’s why I make it a priority to show up fully as myself. My community connects with that honesty. They see that Spoony Candle Co. isn’t just about fragrance — it’s about belonging, intention, and creating room for joy in the everyday.
Loyalty, for me, comes from consistency and sincerity. Whether it’s a handwritten note in every order, thoughtful packaging, or a story shared online, my customers know there’s a person behind this brand who genuinely cares about what he’s making and who he’s making it for.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One of the most defining moments for me came early in my business. I had just launched a new collection, poured every ounce of creativity (and savings) into it, and then everything that could go wrong did — mislabeled jars, shipping delays, wax issues, you name it. I remember standing in my kitchen surrounded by boxes, wondering if I’d made a huge mistake.
Instead of giving up, I took a breath, cleaned up, and started again. I reached out to other small makers, watched tutorials late into the night, and tested until I got it right. That season taught me what resilience really looks like: it’s not perfection, it’s persistence. It’s finding strength in your purpose when things don’t go as planned.
As a Black, gay creative, resilience has always been part of my story. I’ve learned that showing up authentically — in spaces where people like me haven’t always been centered — is an act of strength in itself. Spoony Candle Co. was born out of that resilience. Every candle I pour is a reminder that creativity and care can exist together, even when the path isn’t easy.
