We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Angella Sharpe a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Angella , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Taking a risk is something I hope to do more of. If you think about it life is a series of risk – and you can easily fail doing something safe – just as much as you could taking that big risk and doing it what you want. ….. I don’t take as many risks as I should but so far all the ones I have take. have paid off!
Always remember opportunities are fleeting!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
to be honest, this career totally found me. I was in college majoring in special education when slowly doors and windows started to open in the realm of sports In Game Host. And from there it kind of took off the man who is the Director of the TV show we used to hang out after college was also the man who directed the St. Louis blues games. It’s kind of like this life found me. Now I’ve had to scratch my way for people to take me seriously past in game work but it’s something I love to do. I am definitely resilient and I will bug all the people that need to be bugged for the opportunity to show my skill set.. now I have a show that I host weekly plus a bi monthly show which features me doing ridiculous things in the St. Louis area. I am super blessed but I am still a scratching my way to the top. I will get there.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I kind of hate sharing the story. I don’t like to speak negatively about things of the past.. but I was the happiest, had the dream job of my life, and then, as companies do they mix things up I got a new boss. that boss said they did not like strong women. It was a time when I realized I wasn’t going to be able to last in the job, I thought I would work at for the end of time. But I did what anybody would do and I looked for better opportunities elsewhere. almost serendipitously that same night I started looking I found a perfect opportunity for me.. sometimes, even if you don’t want to leave, you know you have to leave and it all works out in the end.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think we all know what to do when the artist or creative is someone who sells something ….make sure you buy that item. But if it’s someone like a TV host or a photographer, make sure you follow them on Instagram and Twitter TikTok make sure you share what they’ve posted. sometimes especially in my world of host work they will give the job to someone with less talent merely because they have more followers. It’s a weird spot to be in, but I’ve seen it happen so the more you can share and like your friends work the better it will be for them in the long run. Plus it cost you nothing to like their page, even if you do not know them in real life but you respect what they do, it cost you nothing to like their page and maybe share a Post or two they’ve made.. sometimes all that artist needs is to be seen by the right person at the right time. You could help make that happen by liking their work and sharing it.
