We recently connected with Angella Macreena and have shared our conversation below.
Angella, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Almost every entrepreneur we know has considered donating a portion of their sales to an organization or cause – how did you make the decision of whether to donate? We’d love to hear the backstory if you’re open to sharing the details.
Yes, we love to give. We donate 10% of our profits to Karamoja Special Children Hope Initiative (KSCHI), an indigenous Non-Government Organization in Uganda.
The Organization provides Occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech language therapy through assessment and rehabilitation for children, fosters social equity and empowerment of communities through providing information, support, advocacy and networking of communities.
KSCHI plans to build a day care rehabilitation center for underprivileged children with special needs providing support, care, protection, counseling, by promoting their education, health and nutritional needs.
KSCHIs founder, Lomonyang Anna reached out to me in 2020. The organization had not yet been registered as an NGO. She needed assistance with funding and finding donors. At the time, she had 126 children in her care. I was fresh out of college, and didn’t know how I could be of help. I sent her some of what I had saved and designed posters. We shared the posters on facebook, instagram and WhatsApp. One of them caught the attention of Dorian Isabel Cosijnce from the Netherlands.
Dorian was a pillar and a shoulder to the children. She was very down to earth, kind, compassionate with a big heart for humanitarianism. She travelled to Uganda in March 2022 to tour the country and finally meet the children and KSCHI board. She was to sign a MOU with KSCHI for five years. Sadly, on her way to meet everyone, she had a road accident and passed. it breaks my heart that she isn’t here today. She left a big gap.
Creena beauty was officially launched on June 2022. so, I’d say the cause “chose” the founder, and the founder chose the cause. It was a no brainer.
Angella, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Macreena, I’m a Christian, love pasta. I always joke that I’m Italian on the inside. hahah. I love to travel, dance, create. I am passionate about beauty and have probably watched a million youtube makeup tutorials.
Creena beauty came about during the covid lockdown. As I was reading the Bible, specifically about Queen Esther, I started to visualize what kind of woman she was, her interests, fashion sense, hobbies, lipstick brand and color she’d love if she lived in this era. Somehow the idea of lip products stuck and before long, I was making lipglosses from scratch in my room in the middle of the pandemic.
We retail lipglosses, they come in 10 different vibrant shades. They protect lips from drying and cracking in especially in dry/cold weather/sun exposure. They are super hydrating and nourishing leaving your lips moist and soft. They are long lasting, give your lips a pop of color with a glossy finish.
We are a Christian brand, one of our missions is to reach people with the word of God. To especially let young people know that they are enough. In a world where people feel inadequate, with the rise in mental health illnesses, comparison through social media. To let them know that they are fearfully and wonderfully made. They are loved, appreciated and that they matter.
We want to empower, build confidence and community.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
Initially, I did a lot of research, bought all the products I needed and did the manufacturing myself. I ran into a few troubles. The biggest one was transferring the gloss into the bottle. It took up so much time to fill up one bottle. If there was a lot of gloss, the covers would pop out randomly. It also made a big mess. Being an oily mixture, it left the bottles greasy and sticky. It took half a day’s work to manufacture 30 glosses.
I knew I needed an extra set of hands, so I found a vendor, took some time to find the right one. But it was all worth it.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I was working as an English teacher, part time. I made decent money that I used to fund the initial part of my business.
