We recently connected with Angelique Wong and have shared our conversation below.
Angelique , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Both my parents are entrepreneurs. Both my parents are immigrants. This required them to start from scratch at a very young age. Every single detail had to be figured out for their new life. Many entrepreneurs start the beginning of their journey figuring this out completely alone or with very small teams. As someone who grew up with social media, I quickly understood its value when I start to pursue my own entrepreneurial endeavors. My advantage was my ability and understanding to teach myself the intricacies of marketing through social media and how it can be essential in your growth as a business. When going to farmers markets, coaching sessions, track meets, and vendor pop-up events with my parents, I realize that many business owners we connected with were very similar to them; minority business owners who had a great idea but had no clue how to reach their target market, I always say, there are over 7 billion people on this planet so we can find one who wants to buy your product or service. So I set created Societal Heights with a mission to be the liaison between teaching the understanding for businesses to develop their plan, identity, and marketing strategies to grow beyond their dreams. My ability to go after my passions come largely from growing up with support for every endeavor I’ve ever dreamed of. I will always be grateful to my parents for that. I show that appreciation by passing that support to others.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve been involved with Fashion in every capacity since I was 10 years old. I’ve sold t-shirts, and scarves, owned Etsy shops, and so much more. I always loved to create and pursue something of my own. I was lucky enough growing up to have parents who supported every ambition and idea I had so I went for it.
Societal Heights is a marketing agency that focuses on business development and effective marketing. I’ve experienced firsthand, how easy it is to fall short on your business’s responsibilities when you’re balancing life, mental health, families, and whatever comes your way. So we take the burden of having to figure it all out yourself off your shoulder by becoming a team member that assists clients with growing this business full time. We provide subscriptions built around the goals of your business and provide services like remote product photoshoots, social media management, business development, vendor prep presentation, and a variety of others. We are built on empathy, understanding, and accountability so that your side hustle gets the chance to become your full-time.
I am proud that I am able to help other businesses and people. Digital Marketing is intricate, complicated and always changing and that can be overwhelming and discouraging. I support hope and passion through my work and I am extremely proud of that.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Since I started my business as a student entrepreneur, I have done a lot of pitch competitions to earn funding for my businesses. I also invested a lot of personal capital, which was a gradual process, as I was still a student, and after graduation, I had a lot of new responsibilities. I also participated in small business cohorts and scholarship programs. I still do a lot of scholarships, cohorts, events, and competitions even though the business is now revenue-generating because it gives us more exposure and builds the brand’s awareness.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One thing I had to unlearn was my DIY entrepreneurial mindset. That’s when an entrepreneur thinks they have to do every single part of the process themselves in order to get successful results. I’ll admit I just made the term up but I believe it is fitting to how many entrepreneurs view business. When I initially started, I was so used to doing things by myself that it took some unlearning old habits to really ask for help and network more effectively. Once I shifted this mindset, I was able to expand my ability to take advantage of every opportunity and connect with people who want to help you grow.
