Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Angelique Porter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Angelique, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about the best advice you’ve ever given to a client? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
I work frequently with clients that have experienced trauma. When we experience trauma, we are often not aware that we are experiencing life in the “there and then” instead of the “here and now”. So, I had one client that had experienced trauma and expressed significant challenges being around a trigger for them. Together, we worked on using the five senses (touch, smell, hearing, vision, taste) to bring themselves back into the present. I talk to them about how being present is an anchor – it roots us and makes us feel safe. They had told me that they talked to themselves about a triggering event they would be attending. They said they had placed their hands on their heart and stomach before the event, and they less anxiety because they knew this event was not their previous traumatic event. It was the first time they had experienced feeling calm at this event in years.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
While in graduate school, I began to focus on trauma and children at-risk for less likely successfully transitioning into adulthood due to adverse life experiences. It was this focus where I gained education and experience in how the body, not just the mind, is affected by traumatic experiences. I went on to study massage and reiki to further help individuals process and heal from traumatic stress.
With my background in dance, music, art, and writing, I became trained in Expressive Arts Therapy, Play Therapy, and Somatic Experiencing to help individusls learn how to use non-talk methods for their own healing. Today, I use my holistic approach to guide each person towards their own path to wellness.
Currently I offer individual therapy, wellness coaching, Reiki, Acupressure, Myofascial Release, Sound Healing, and tarot readings.

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could go back in time, I would definitely choose the same profession. Even though I started my formal education in psychology, I would not have found my passion for bodywork and energywork if not for my clinical path in helping individuals with trauma.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn trying to be “professional”. In all of my roles, but especially therapy, I had this idea of what practitioners looked like sounded like, and dressed. I shortly realized that trying to be a cookie cutter ideal of what I thought people wanted was not relating with people. I have found that the more I’m more myself, the more I connected with people.
