We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Angeline Spencer . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Angeline below.
Alright, Angeline thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Growing up my family culture involved creating/making and resourcefulness (from canning our own food to sewing and designing) so I always had a knack and joy for making jewelry pieces for myself or as gifts for friends. During my late teens and early 20s I ended up working for a clothing boutique in Colorado that also sold jewelry-making supplies that I would use. Working there for a number of years I interacted with customers who would ask about my own jewelry pieces and creations I was wearing and where I got them. The owner of the boutique eventually asked if I would be interested in selling some of my own designs in the store after a period of time. This is where I gained confidence in my product, as I was able to see people actually purchasing my pieces, beyond just making jewelry as a hobby for myself or friends. The brand was officially born in 2011 and then continued to evolve after our move from Colorado to Los Angeles.
Our brand and jewelry pieces are centered around inspiring joy and playfulness! We want our customers to feel and embody this philosophy when they wear our jewelry and on the production end we really do find so much joy and pleasure when creating our products. We believe that when you’re excited and impassioned about the work your creating this translates to the customer feeling inspired when they wear the pieces. This philosophy has been a part of us since the brand’s beginnings and even as we’ve changed locations and been through the pandemic we’ve really stayed committed to these ideals. We also value the communities we work with and within, we’ve partnered with SPCA LA in the past to help contribute to animal welfare, a cause very important to us, and we maintain close relationships with the factories and families we work with abroad.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello, I’m Angeline Spencer but most often go by just Spencer. I’m from the Denver/Boulder area of Colorado, a state I love very dearly, though I now live in Los Angeles with my husband and our two cats. I went to school for photography and have always been immersed in the creative fields from fashion and apparel to design and jewelry. I also spent time working as a DJ (back when we used CD’s) and met my husband on the dance floor. I love a good sense of humor, vintage inspired design and doing puzzles at our family cabin in the mountains.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
A critically important part of our brand is creating a healthy and supportive environment for the people working on our team. From personal experience many companies view the people that work for them as disposable and that framework creates a stressful and dehumanizing atmosphere. We value the voices, input and wellbeing of our team and will always operate from a space of accountability and compassionate support as we evolve.
It’s also important to us that we keep the physical studio space our employees work in feeling safe and comfortable, as we all co-work together in the space. Maintaining a work environment that supports our employees needs, physical and emotional health, and snack preferences is a top priority for us.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The pandemic was such a monumental shift in how we lived and worked as a society. Prior to this I was working in apparel and accessories brand management, so my work life was quite full already and I only worked on the brand during any hours I could spare. I spent about 12 years in this role and before this had worked as a buyer, so I was accustomed to the brand taking more of a side focus over the years. When the pandemic changed the pace of life and affected my personal health it also allowed me to pivot and invest in the brand more intentionally, turning the work into a full time endeavor. Once I shifted my sole focus to be on the brand it began to flourish and grow in ways I couldn’t have predicted.
I also think a lot of pivoting has to naturally happen when you’re involved in multiple aspects of your brand. I still enjoy photography and shoot the branding and images of the jewelry and models myself, so being adaptable to the different roles needed to keep the brand growing has been very important over the past couple years.
