We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Angelina David a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Angelina, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Ever since I was a kid, my favorite movie has always been The Sound of Music. I remember watching it on repeat as a kid and it will always have a very special place in my heart. At the beginning of my senior year of high school, I saw that a local theater was putting on The Sound of Music and I knew I just had to audition. Liesl von Trapp has always been a dream role of mine (I could truly play that role over and over again forever) and I was blessed to get the role! I was ecstatic. I dove into prep work fell even more in love with the story, the music, and the role. The rehearsal process was nothing short of magical. I got to work with the most incredible production team and cast who I am still very close with today. I sobbed during the show many times because it meant so much to me and I don’t think I’ve ever cried more than our closing performance. I am eternally grateful to the production team and cast for allowing me to find the strength and power in Liesl and myself.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi! My name is Angelina, and I am an actor, singer, dancer, songwriter, and model currently based in the Southeast. I was born in La Jolla, California, and grew up in Memphis, TN. Ever since I can remember, I have always been drawn to storytelling and the arts. When I was five years old, I did my very first musical and fell in love with acting and performing and I have been doing it ever since! I have always had a deep passion for the arts and a very strong drive to succeed. In addition to theatre and training, I started self submitting for film and television projects at the age of twelve. When I was sixteen, I started Dreams Come True Princess Parties, the Mid-South’s premier character entertainment company, and sold it at the beginning of 2024. Running the business and performing as many of the characters was an incredible, yet extremely challenging, experience. It was so rewarding getting to bring the stories that I love to life and connect with so many children across the area. I also learned that it is impossible for me to do anything with less than 110% effort. After graduating high school, I dove into the film and television world and started working on sets all across the Southeast. I quickly learned that set was my favorite place in the world and I met so many wonderful, creative people. I also got out of my comfort zone and started writing music. This past year has been filled with so many wonderful opportunities, but also so many new experiences and challenges that allowed me to truly grow and learn. My songs I have written encapsulate that idea and very much reflect what it is like to be an emotional, people-pleasing 19 year old girl in society today. I am currently working on my debut album, Delusional, and recently released my first single, “Gas Station Boy,” to which I also directed, wrote, produced, and starred in the music video for. Once again proving that it is impossible for me to do anything less than 110%. It has been such a therapeutic experience writing music because it is validating that my stories are important as well, as I am a huge advocate for the idea that everyone’s story deserves to be told. I believe that connection and empathy are what we need now more than ever and stories can help connect us in ways we can’t even imagine.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I believe there are so many ways to support the arts in society, but it all starts with acceptance. Whether we realize it or not, art drives and connects our society in ways we can’t even begin to imagine. Stories inspire us and allow us to see ourselves and each other in different ways. Art also allows for empathy, which is what our society needs now more than ever. I believe all artists should be celebrated for sharing their craft with the world. It is very brave to put something out into the world knowing that it will not be liked by everyone. The more we can encourage and celebrate creatives, the more creative our society will become.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Empathy, for sure. I believe it is the most important skill an actor can possess and as an actor, I strive to inspire empathy in others through storytelling. The more we can empathize with one another, the more we can understand and love one another and celebrate our differences and imperfections, rather than let them divide and define us.
