We were lucky to catch up with Angelica Weber recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Angelica, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
I am a proud First Generation American. My father, Nico, was born & raised in a small town in Chihuahua, MX. His life took a challenging turn as he had to work in the mines during his early teens and couldn’t complete grade school. However, his determination led him to immigrate to the USA, where he worked tirelessly in the construction industry until he passed away in 2012.
On the other hand, my mother, Tati, was born in Havanna, Cuba, and her life was marked by an extraordinary journey. At the tender age of 11, she courageously fled communism and arrived in the USA as an unaccompanied minor as part of Operation Pedro Pan. Initially placed in a refuge camp, she later found herself in foster care until the age of 17, when her mother finally reunited with her. Now a pastor, my mother possesses a remarkable eye for design and an unwavering attention to detail.
Inspired by my parents’ perseverance, I started my own business with a clear goal: to distinguish myself from the rest. Thus, I decided to honor their struggle and sacrifices by creating Nico Tati Designs—a true legacy that will endure for generations to come.
Angelica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
When I started Nico Tati, initially, my focus solely revolved around providing Interior Design services, but over time, it naturally expanded to encompass social media management and other business solutions. With eight years of experience in the construction industry, my passion for it grows every day. However, my heart truly lies in world of tiles, where I’ve discovered a sense of belonging and the perfect place for my business to flourish.
Throughout my journey, I’ve proudly achieved numerous Interior Design certifications and received awards, but the certifications that fill me with the greatest pride are the ones that have earned through hands one training of the installation process. Armed with this understanding, I can design with both functionality and purpose, speaking the language of installers and thereby bridging the gap between them and their clients. This in-depth comprehension of the industry has opened doors for me to serve it further by managing the social media presence of other industry members and even aiding in implementing effective policies and procedures for installers.
I consider myself immensely blessed to be able to provide for my family through a job that I wholeheartedly adore. It brings me immense joy to know that my passion aligns perfectly with my profession, allowing me to thrive while taking care of my loved ones.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
In this industry, I have carved out a distinctive reputation by authentically revealing who I am to both my clients and peers. By consistently keeping my promises and consistently surpassing expectations, I have let my actions do the talking. As a result, I have left a lasting impression that speaks volumes about my character and dedication to excellence.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The most significant challenge I’ve faced to this day is understanding that not everyone is a true friend. It’s a lesson I’ve learned along the way – it’s okay not to be friends with everyone, and I don’t need to let just anyone into my inner circle. I’ve come to realize through painful experiences that no matter how much effort and love I invest in someone, if they don’t reciprocate the same for me, they never will.
Trying to build a connection with someone who doesn’t genuinely want to grow with me can be hurtful, and I’ve come to accept that there’s no space for such relationships in my life. I’ve learned the importance of investing my time and energy into those who value and cherish our bond, fostering relationships that are based on mutual growth and respect.
