We were lucky to catch up with Angelica Prescod recently and have shared our conversation below.
Angelica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s one of the most important lessons you learned in school?
For me, one of the most important lessons I learned in school is that you’re never done learning. You’re never done reinventing yourself. You’re never done creating You’re never done dreaming. That was impactful for me, because it allowed for me to be the motivational speaker that’s flexible. I’m the motivational speaker that is willing to adjust and see the person for who they are today, understanding that they may be something else tomorrow. I learned to be fluid.
When I started college, I wanted to be a doctor. Then, I decided to be a financial advisor. And now, I’m morphing into a motivational speaker. As for whatever is next, all i know is that, it’s going to be great, because I was great at every single one of those activities. If you also stay flexible as you learn, no matter what you choose to do, you can be great at it all.
Angelica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a forward-thinking legacy builder who empowers the community with purpose development and strategy. I’m a top Forbes recognized financial advisor, business coach and motivational speaker that provides actionable advice to disrupt the norm and change the future. I believe everyone can win and teach others how to leave their fingerprint on the world in unforgettable ways.
A Panama City, Panama native, I grew up with humble beginnings. However, my mother, the first black female captain in the Panama Canal, instilled in me that I can do anything I am willing to pay the price for, and that there’s a fee for excellence. This guidance has assisted me in reinventing myself time and time again, pursuing success through adversity. My mother would soon succumb to a battle with cancer while I was a preteen.
With a burning desire to learn and help others, I pursued a career in medicine while in Panama. I achieved my goal to serve while overcoming my fear of not having the resources to sustain my foundation. In moving to the States, I promised my father, who was fighting stomach cancer, that I would carry on in excellence and continue to build the family legacy. In fulfilling this promise, I pivoted my career path in ways that made even more global impact than medicine would have allowed as a financial advisor.
Working with mentors and coaches has accelerated my growth exponentially. Under the tutelage of my advisors, I was able to dream beyond any set limitations and replicate the disciplines that led them to success. The student has now become the teacher. I now create a space for my mentees to recognize their areas of opportunity without judgment and recognize their strengths without cockiness. I believe the benefits of coaching and mentoring are igniting the fire, or giving more air so the fire is even more powerful within a person‘s heart. I live for the aha moments when things start lining up and making sense for each person I speak to. Seeing genuine fortitude and strength develop, confidence get stronger, wisdom increase, and forgiveness to themselves on any shortcomings that occur is the reward for me.
I am an accelerator. I assist those who have achieved career success, yet they still feel like their lives are lacking depth. Through strategic partnership, I challenge them to tap into their innermost desires and create a legacy mark that will last for generations to come. I believe that behind every set of eyes, there’s a mind brilliant enough to change this world for the better, forever. I aim to accelerate the opportunity of this moment happening.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Transparency! When I address any audience, whether as a financial advisor, motivational speaker or legacy coach, I am transparent and encourage them to be the same. Transparency leads to true transformation. When I am transparent and truthful in my approach to purposeful living, it allows my audience a safe space to truly explore their motivations and shortcomings. Because of this straightforward approach to development, my clients and mentees continue to grow.
Any advice for managing a team?
Motivating a team means learning them for who they are and becoming the biggest cheerleader of their strengths. Building a team means aligning your vision with other talented individuals who see the vision from their own perspective and through their scope of expertise. Cultivating an environment in which they can thrive in their skills while also understanding how they function when things are not going as planned, helps me lead and maintain a well oiled machine.
