Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Angelica Nor. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Angelica, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
My whole life I have been surrounded by music. My grandfather was the second chair violinist of the Florida Symphony and my mom a choreographer of the Colombian TV Shows “El Show de Jimmy” And “Baila de Rumba”. My brother, a drummer and metal head taught me basic music theory and would show me a few things on the drums. This inspired me but music always seemed so intimidating. Until one day I decided to break the ice and dive into the vast world of music. I downloaded my first DAW in 2018. If the world had access to my Ableton files of 2018 they’d say “she’s not making it out the hood”. I think it took me at least a week to find out how to add a MIDI file that actually made noise. Once I got some noise it was about learning how to make a song. I would get samples from songs I liked and tried to make my own version of it. I was really into electronic music at the time so my first song “Trinity Falls” is a reflection of my growth at the time. Once I felt more confident in my music production I started rapping. I would listen to Kendrick Lamar songs and learned all the lyrics. I would even listen to the instrumental versions of his songs and rap along to see if I could keep along with breath control and test my understanding of how to keep rhythm while staying creative. Even now i’m still learning with every song I make. I’m constantly trying new things like adding singing and Spanish to my music. I know I have much more to learn but that’s what I love about music.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Angelica Nor and I am a Producer, Singer and Songwriter based in South Florida. My genre of music is Alt/Hip-Hop with inspiration from artists like Eartheater, Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller, Mr Twin Sister and Erykah Badu. I can name a thousand more people but for your sake, i’ll keep it at 5. I find it important to create even when i’m not in a creative mind set. I’m constantly thinking of song ideas, music video ideas, photoshoot ideas, coming up with promotions and always finding ways to express myself. Music can bring out feelings you thought you buried or hid away from yourself. Music makes you tap your feet or nod your head without even noticing. I’m here to tell stories with my music and while i’m at it make your toes tap… or even better, mosh pit at my shows. Or maybe cry? I guess it depends on what song i’m playing.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think a lot of people both creatives and non-creatives are afraid to express themselves or show sides of themselves proudly. Even i’m still learning to not be shy about certain things and to not care what others think but my journey as a creative has really shown me how to get out of my head and to do things because they make me happy. When I started performing and making music videos I would pretend I was someone else because it was embarrassing to be doing the things my shy self would consider wild. Now I feel much more comfortable expressing myself.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It’s rewarding when people listen to your music with a smile on their face. What I love the most is when i’m at a show and people sing along to my music. That feels so nice, the first time it happened my eyes watered. There’s nothing better than being in a room full of people and you’re all connected through the music.
