We were lucky to catch up with Angelica Caudillo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Angelica, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I feel just as almost any small business it started during the early stages of COVID. My older daughter didn’t go back to school after spring break so I knew I needed to find something to keep her busy. I was on Amazon and I found a candle kit. We started working on that and just like any little kid she got bored of it, but I on the other hand enjoyed it so much.
I started to research healthier and safer ingredients. I wanted to start making candles but I wanted them to be safe. I didn’t want someone to get a headache when they lit my candle.
Angelica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Angelica, I sometimes go by Angie. I am a mom of 2 daughters & 1 bonus daughter. I still work a full time job during the day and I focus on my business in the evenings and weekends. One weekend as we were thinking of names, Adriana (my oldest) tells me that I should put all of my 3 daughter’s names and mine as my business name. I told her I can’t put all 4 girls’ name. Then that’s when it clicked and that became the name of our business. That’s something that I’m so proud of is the name. It’s something so meaningful to me and reminds me that I started this with my daughter and even tho she doesn’t have much interest for it anymore, this is for them.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
I actually manufacture all my products. I create my own labels and warning labels. I customize my own candle scent. There are a few scents that I’ve had and people tell me it’s something they’ve never smelled before. I like to think fragrance is such a special way to remember people, places and things. That when I create my scents I think of what does this remind me of. That’s actually the most exciting part of candle making it’s being able to create whatever type of candle you want.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I grew my audience I would say first was family and friends then I started attending market events and I have this QR code that people can scan to follow us on Instagram or Facebook. It also started growing by word of mouth, 100x thank you to those who refer my business rather than a corporate business.
But I would say if you are just starting out and don’t know what to post, just post bts, post knowledgeable information, post a sneak peek. You can post anything and you just never know who will watch it.
